A Guide to Being a Girl in IIT

Posted on 16 Jun' 17 by Monashree Das
Batch of 2020 | B.Tech Mechanical Engineering
The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati is considered one of the best institution in India and my branch of Mechanical Engineering is considered to be the most sought after and the most in demand among them all. The infrastructure of the college is well established and lives upto its reputation of being an IIT. The college campus is huge with a total of 11 hostels and numerous playgrounds. Almost all kinds of facilities for recreational activities have been added to the campus. But as expected, in IITG there is a genuine lack of female students with almost 95% of the total students being male. This may sound alarming at first for ladies who have trouble coexisting almost everyday with boys but gradually this becomes no issue as the students are completely friendly and helpful. They will constantly support you no matter what. The faculty too is very friendly constantly pushing our limits to achieve new heights of excellence. They also show genuine interest when we approach them with any new projects. The industry exposure is also upto the mark with the senior students getting good internships in some of the biggest industries in India. College life is simply amazing in IITG. Mostly due to the fact that constantly all sorts of events are organised within the campus for people with all kinds of interests. Like all technical institutes IITG hosts 'Techniche' as our technical event and 'Alcheringa' as our cultural event. Techniche is held in the first week of September and lasts for upto 4 days. Numerous competitions, workshops, interactive talks etc are organized during these days. People from other institutes too come to attend these events. The annual cultural festival of IITG 'Alcheringa' is one of the greatest and biggest festival of India. People from all over Assam, students and common people alike flock to attend it. The four night cultural extravaganza features many types of shows and performances by artists all over the world. The placements from our college are way above the average pay for the type of engineer with most packages over 10 lakhs. The mechanical department which i belong to boasts 90+ % placements each year. The college hostels too are better than most other IITs and NITS but i personally feel that the rooms are a bit cramped. Hope more hostels would be made soon with spacious rooms. The canteens are affordable providing 24/7 service. The food kiosks within the campus also provide special discounts on specific days to students. All in all, life in IITG is like a dream come true for me and it really feels as if all the hard work i have put have proved to be fruitful.

IITG is one of the most beautiful campus in india. On particular regarding my branch, Placement is kind of worse. You can get job if you can change your field like Coding, Analystand consulting. Professors are not strict and they don't have any problem regarding attendance issue. They are very heplful if we have serious interest in research. IITG has very good infrastructure. Hostel Life is very cool and all necessary things are in each hostel rooms. In iitg, In each Hostel, Some secretary posts are there in each hostel. these post are helpful for students to get improvement in their managerial skills. In same way, Alcheringa- cult fest and Techniche- tech fest are used as to improve magerial skills by students.

IIT Guwahati is amazing to a huge part because of its student population and the number of opportunities it provides in different fields other than just academics. State-of-the-art research facilities are available at our disposal for conducting advanced research. Speaking of the professors, they are very knowledgeable, but sometimes care very less for teaching having more interests in research. The college also does a lot to keep its students active with various clubs including robotics, dance, music, entrepreneurial cell, finance club, astronomy club, coding club, fine arts club etc. Also, the college has a dedicated counselling cell for students to help them go over their problems. The college is self-sufficient, and the campus is fully secured and is guarded with its own security. Many buses ply to and from the city each day for the students and faculty members. And just to add to it all, this is an serene and might I add the one of the most beautiful campus in India.

Leading engineering college of India with high potential

Batch of 2019 | B.Tech Civil Engineering
Making it to IIT was like dream come true for me and it was even worth making all efforts. IIT Guwahati is established in North East region of India surrounded by mountains from its all sides. Brahmaputra river flows next to it.It is considered to be one of the most beautiful engineering college.Faculty are good at their job but their lecture are too boring otherwise they are helpful. Ragging is strictly prohibited and even senior are good in nature.U can get the help from senior any time.Ablot of club exist such as aeromodeling, coding, electronic, automobile etc .U can improve your skills by joining this club.College curriculum mostly focus on practical learning hence 3 labs per week is conducted. Placement is average for civil but in the coming year it will improve as more and more PSU are coming for hiring each year.Industrial exposure is quite less,on that part college needs to improve. Hostel are well equipped with all necessary facilities such as sports room, water cooler,TV room and 24 hrs canteen. In my hostel mess food quality is good but as far as I have heard in other hostels it is too bad.Fee is average only and can be afforded by any middle class family and also education loan is provided

General Information

About College: The Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati (IITG), like the other older IITs has become synonymous with excellence. It is often remarked how in India, kids hear more about the IITs when they are growing up, than about their cousins, such is the rush towards reaching this very top. Lakhs of students from all over the country enrol themselves over countless hours of coaching classes in order to secure a seat among these IITs. Within this elite list of institutions, there is a super- elite subgroup known as the original IITs, which is a group of the 7 original ones which are – Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee. Securing a seat at the IITs is done through a rigorous selection process involving the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). This is the largest entrance exam in the country in terms of numbers and possibly amongst the largest in the world. This paper is given by more than 12 lakh people annually. It is a 3- hour exam worth 90 marks constituting 3 segments with equal weightage. Those segments are- Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics. The best of the performers, totalling roughly 2 lakhs of them are further shortlisted for the JEE Advanced which is for selection to the IITs. The JEE Advanced is conducted over 2 rounds on the same day. The morning paper which runs from 9 am till noon is followed by a break and then another 3 hour one. The pattern, however, is not so well understood as the marks pattern is not clearly defined. It keeps changing annually. All this effort means that the acceptance rate is minuscule, standing at around 0.5% for IITG in stark contrast to global luminaries such as MIT, Stanford or UC Berkeley standing at 7.5%, 4.8% and 17.5% respectively. Admissions to the master’s level programmes is via the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). The IITG is among the newest of the older lot as it was formally inaugurated only in 1994. It's 700- acre campus is considered amongst the most beautiful ones in India. Several courses can be pursued at the IITG. This includes the B. Tech, M. Tech, MBA, MSc. and even an MA. There is also a dual degree. The academics is run by the respective departments which are in- Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Design, Mechanical Engineering, Biosciences & Bioengineering, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Realizing its importance over the coming years, the IIT- Madras even has a specialized Humanities and Social Sciences wing. Beyond the academic courses, the IITG also has several specialized centres which facilitate further applied research and development. There are centres for- Energy, Environment, Nanotechnology, Rural Technology, Linguistic Science & Technology, Career Development, Creativity, Educational Technology, Instruments and Computer & Communications. Sports and other non- academic activities also flourish among the students here. The annual cultural extravaganza is known as the Alcheringa. The main techn0 management fest is the Technique, while Udgam is the entrepreneurship summit at IITG. Inter-hostel meets such as Spardha, Manthan and Kriti are also frequent. The IIT in Guwahati is particularly well- endowed when it comes to forging international relations. It has inked agreements of various sorts from leading educational institutions in countries such as- Australia, UK, USA, UAE, France, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Belarus, China, Colombia, Azerbaijan, Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, Ethiopia, Italy, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, Portugal, Romania, Netherlands, New Zealand, Mexico and even from tiny Fiji. Foreign students even study in fairly large numbers here as well. There are also a lot of agreements with fellow Indian institutions, built on the premise of knowledge exchange. This list includes the likes of- All India Institute of Speech & Hearing, Institute of Chinese Studies, CSIR- Dehradun, PEC University of Technology, Assam Don Bosco University, Indian Naval Academy as well as several NITs all over. All this has helped the IIT in Guwahati be featured very highly across most national or international rankings. It has been ranked the 7th in the country among engineering colleges by the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework) and 12th overall. The highly- acclaimed QS World University Rankings placed it at 501- 550 band for the world, 98th for Asia and 52nd among the BRICS nations. A lot of this has been possible due to the presence of its top-notch alumni network. As the IITG has been associated with excellence for so long, placements have likewise been among the very best in the country. A total of 110 companies participated in the placement process in 2018. Some of the top recruiters have been the likes of – Microsoft, Ola, Goldman Sachs, Paytm, Qualcomm, Citibank, Tata Motors, Cognizant, RIL, L&T, Times Internet, Cisco Infosys, Amazon, Baja, Adobe, ITC, Samsung, American Express, Oracle, Future First, Deutsche Bank and EXL.
