The word 'domicile' refers to a country or place where a person has his/her permanent residence (home) or legal address.

One cannot change his/her domicile but one can get domicile of a particular district if he/she or his/her parents have resided at that place for atleast five preceding years or they own any immovable property/land there.

Domicile certificate is an official document that proves an individual's residential status in a particular State/Union Territory.

Documents required to apply for a domicile certificate are:-

1. Residential proof (like Ration card, driving licence etc.)

2. Proof of birth (like Birth Certificate, Admit Card of Matriculation etc.)

3. Identity proof (Voter ID card, Aadhar card, PAN card etc)

4. Two passport size photographs

5. A self declaration

6. A duly filled application form

7. A court affidavit

and some others (depending on the State/UT).

It is issued by any concerned authority of State Government like Sub-Divisional Magistrate's Office or District Collector's Office. Its validity usually ranges from 6 months to 5years.
