The Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI) is a university affiliated, constituent college founded in 2011 in Orathanadu, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. VCRI Orathanadu is spread across a large area of 206.96-acres and offers two specialized degree programs only in veterinary science. Therefore suggesting that 50% of its enrollment is in undergraduate and post graduate levels, and in total this institute has 836 number of students. 

The college, has a compound that accommodates a blend of female students who constitute 51% and male students who in equal proportion constitute 49%. The college has a faculty of 54 members affiliated to VCRI Orathanadu and they maintain an appropriate student teacher ratio. To achieve the institute’s commitment to the quality of education, the school’s emphasis on veterinary science and animal husbandry gives learners an all-round understanding of the respective fields. VCRI Orathanadu has many facilities that will in one way or the other help support learning and development of students. There are 1,591 books, including general and competitive exam in the college library, 15 journals, 98 veterinary CD ROMs, and 17 magazines/newspapers. Some of the above services offered include document lending, reference assistance and on-line document delivery. The campus facilities include sophisticated practical demonstrations labs, a computer center with LAN facilities, and free computer practical training with applications.  For the purpose of students health facilities of physical, indoor and outdoor games, Gym, hostel for Boys & Girls are available. Some of the facilities made available in the hostels include; Internet connection- reading room, television hall, and washing facilities. Moreover, there is one more college facility: an auditorium for events and seminars; a properly equipped cafeteria; and a health center with first aid equipment.

The institute offers two main courses: a B.V.Sc and AH which takes 5 years and M.V.Sc which takes 2 years. Both of them are full time courses and it can be attributed to the policy of this institute of offering intensive knowledge in veterinary sciences. The B.V.Sc and AH program accepts up to 80 students per academic year while for the M.V.Sc programme their intake is unknown. On the whole, VCRI Orathanadu consists of five hundred and thirty-six students in undergraduate and another five hundred and thirty-six in postgraduate programs totaling six seventy-six students.

Admission policy of VCRI Orathanadu ensures enlisting talented and willing students in veterinary courses only. It has multicultural admission policy, in which 93% of students are from within the state and remaining 7 % students are from other states of India and other countries belonging to Tamil Nadu state. VCRI Orathanadu, being an affiliated college probably has an advantage of being affiliated to a larger university and brings added advantages to students. The fact that the institute offers programmes in veterinary sciences and animal husbandry, makes it suitable for students with love for animals.
