    About Madras University

    The University of Madras (UOM), Chennai was established in 1857 by an Act of the Legislative Council of India. It is a state university that is co-ed in nature. The total student enrollment in the university is more than forty-one thousand and the total number of faculty is more than 250 in number. Madras University has been approved by the UGC and has received ‘A’ grade from NAAC. As per the NIRF ranking for the year 2021, the varsity has been ranked 28th in the university category whereas it was ranked 22nd in the NIRF ranking 2020 for the university category. Also, the university has been ranked at 47th position in the NIRF ranking 2021 in the overall category.

    The University of Madras offers 165 courses and these are offered in 3 levels. The levels are diploma, PG, and post PG. Madras University offers many specializations in the courses which are available. Diploma and PG Diploma courses are offered by the university at the Diploma level. 8 courses are offered by the Madras University at the PG level. The research programs offered by the University of Madras include M.Phil in many fields. 

    Madras University placement is handled by the University Student Advisory Bureau (USAB). University of Madras placement department offers training to the students and also makes sure that reputed companies visit the university during the placement drive. Apart from this, the students who are registered to USAB are provided placement opportunities in government/private organizations and PSUs. Madras University also offers a large number of scholarships to the students and most of these scholarships are given on economic-cum-merit basis.     • NSS - Madras University clubs include the NSS unit which regularly organizes various events in the university. The NSS unit also sends its volunteers to various inter-state and national integration camps.

    The university offers many scholarships to its students. Madras University scholarships include SC/ST Scholarships, BC/MBC Scholarships, Financial Assistance to Research Scholars for International Travel and National Overseas Scholarship for Students with Disabilities for Studying Abroad. Apart from this the University of Madras also offers many endowment scholarships to its students. Some of these Madras University scholarships are the Rotary Club of Madras City Endowment Scholarship, Lions International Endowment Scholarship, Lady Willingdon Peace Endowment Scholarship, Sir T Muthuswamy Iyer Endowment Scholarship, etc. These scholarships come with a cash prize for the eligible students and most of these scholarships are given on economic-cum-merit basis.     The university has a dedicated placement department. Madras University placements and training are overseen by the University Students Advisory Bureau (USAB). University of Madras placement training includes the development of soft skills among the students so that they are able to get placed into reputed companies with ease.     It was overall a very good experience so far.

    Yes madras University has a huge campus, and surprisingly all the classes have lights and fans which is surprising. It has mediocre canteen facilities, the campus is moderately clean but it could be cleaner. Parking facility is available for staff as well students.

    Classrooms in our college are good and neatly maintained. We have many lab facilities.. free Wi-Fi is also available for 2GB per day. Each department has its own library facilities.. the hostel has a very good environment. The quality of the food served is also good..
