The Legislative Council of India passed an Act in 1857 that founded the University of Madras (UOM), Chennai. Co-ed in nature, it is a state university. The UGC has authorised Madras University, and NAAC has given it an "A" rating. The institution was ranked 50th in the university category of the NIRF ranking for the year 2023. Three levels of 165 courses are available at the University of Madras. There are three levels: Diploma, UG, and PG. Numerous specialisations are available in the University of Madras courses. The institution offers courses at the diploma level at both the PG Diploma and Diploma levels. At the postgraduate level, Madras University offers 8 programmes. The University of Madras offers M.Phil. programmes in a variety of subjects. The university offers many scholarships to its students. Madras University scholarships are offered to the students to help them fund their education. University of Madras scholarships are the following - SC/ST Scholarships, BC/MBC Scholarships, Financial Assistance to Research Scholars for International Travel and National Overseas Scholarship for Students with Disabilities for Studying Abroad. SC/ST and BC/MBC scholarships are offered by the government of Tamil Nadu. Those students who are travelling abroad for research purposes are given University of Madras scholarship to provide them with financial aid. Yes madras University has a huge campus, and surprisingly all the classes have lights and fans which is surprising. It has mediocre canteen facilities, the campus is moderately clean but it could be cleaner. Parking facility is available for staff as well students.
