One of the oldest engineering colleges with great Alumnis.

I am fourth year now, and the past three years of my life have been best for me. The Campus The campus is astonishing with James Thomson building (Main or Admin building) being a cherry top. Imagine living in a lush green environment with no pollution air. This is how living at this place is like. The college provides you with the best of sports facilities (Yes, the best. Believe me, I have been to other IITs for Inter-IIT.) and best of coaches. Recently, IITR just missed the Inter-IIT championship to IITK by merely half a point. Academics The place is IIT itself, so there shouldn't be any doubt on the quality of education this place provides. It has 21 academic departments covering engineering, applied sciences, humanities & social sciences, and management programmes, 3 academic centre, 1 centres of excellence, 4 academic service centres and 3 supporting units. Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, presented the Charter in November 1949 elevating the erstwhile college to the First Engineering University of Independent India, which lead to establishment of IITKGP. Co-curricular There are many co-curricular activity clubs for students. They are all supervised by a faculty adviser, who, at times might be a pain to deal with. But again it's about you skills and lets you learn how to tackle your annoying bosses in future. Most of the clubs are pro active and keep on organizing workshops and events for the student. One such club is the Cinema Club, which actively premiers recent Bollywood/Hollywood movies, thus solving your problems about theater. History The Roorkee College was established in 1847 AD as the First Engineering College in the British Empire. The College was renamed as The Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. On the 21st September 2001, the University was declared an institute of national importance, by passing a bill in the parliament, changing its status from University of Roorkee to Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. Multi Activity Centre A new Multi Activity Centre has been opened in the campus for different activities. It has got auditoriums, OAT, Cinema Theater, Entertainment Block, Shops, Food Courts etc. So, you get a mall in campus itself, if not in the town. (Cinema Theater, Entertainment Block, Shops, Food Courts etc. are not presently available, but the space has been sanctioned, and we look forward to use them soon.) LAN I have seen may of my friends and mates posting about IITR providing the fastest LAN in all IITs. I don't know if its true or not, but a download speed or around 45 Mbps is sizzling fast. Also, all the hostels are now equiped with high speed LAN. Previously, only the newly made hostels (in 2008) had LAN, rest had poor WiFi connections. These WiFi connections were made way back in 2001, and had a decent speed considering that time. Politics Elections are held every year in the campus for the post ranging from wing senator, to college president. The format of elections have been changed, increasing the competition for candidates. You will get to taste the real politics during this time. And obviously, politics is dirty. 11 to 6 Restriction Their is a restriction on unmarried female students to rest in their hostels after 11 PM till 6 AM. It is because the campus entertains entrance of locals into the campus due to some documents signed at the establishment of institute (this is what we have known). It has been asked to girls, if the limit was further to be extended, and the majority denied. Due to this restriction, problem is faced during some campus event or festival, and you don't get to celebrate birthday with your friends from other hostels. Food Accepted. Food at IITR has not been very impressive. The first year hostel mess serves you with the worst food. But we also have very good messes like the Govind Bhawan mess. The campus has lately introduced non-veg diet in the mess. For which you have to buy coupon separately, and sit separately from the other vegetarian diet students. This becomes pretty awkward. Management Management of the campus it not the best you can find. But it is improving gradually. There is a way for things to get done inside the campus, equally lengthy as any other government office. But they are now making processes simpler at both ends. Again, you need to be smart and clever to get something new done in the campus. Conclusion Every place has its own pros and cons. Its your prospect how you deal with them. Me and all everyone I know at this campus is very proud to be a part of such a great Institute. In my personal opinion, there would be no regrets and you will have a great time if you get to get here. You will end up being a better human and having equally good friends.

Placements were good as always with 100% placements, but the highest and lowest salaries were not disclosed by the placement cell of IIT. Companies like Snapdeal, Bidgley, Microsoft, and Goldman Sachs visited the campus. Internships were also offered to almost all the students of the department. I have heard of a stipend of 2 lacs per month, which was the highest here. Infrastructure : We have Wi-Fi in all the common areas. And a LAN facility is available in the hostel rooms from 6 AM to 1 AM. But we have a limited use of Internet, which is 10GB per week. We have a full equipped 24hr working hospital. The labs and classrooms are world-class and fully air-conditioned with well-equipped features for projecting slides or playing the video lectures. The sports, games and co-curricular activities are given a lot of importance here, and the canteen food and hostel rooms are good. No-infrastructure related issues here. Faculty : The faculty members at IITD are very good. They are super knowledgeable and well-qualified. All kinds of teaching methods like projecting slides, playing videos and writing on boards are used. But, the industry exposure is little less than expected. The curriculum is very well-planned and is very useful for the overall development of a student. Other Details : The annual technical and cultural fests here are splendid. In the technical fest "Tryst", world class professors and technicians are invited. And the cultural fest "Rendezvous" is the biggest college fest in north India, with many stars like Vishal and Shekhar, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Arijit Singh performing in the fest in the last few years. A great infrastructure with almost every single facility one can imagine on campus. A nearly 10 mbps internet 24x7, green lush campus and all sports facilities, this campus is a dreamland in itself. Coming to the placement, an IIT off course is known for its top notch placements, however, if low on grades one can end up at the other side of the barn. Industrial exposure is satisfactory one can say, as it has almost all facilities and instruments for each and every field of technology. The thing to notice though is, updating these techniques is still a problem and machinery mostly is worn out. Faculty quality disappoints. The teachers are researchers not teachers. They have vast field experience but doesn’t have the quality to explain it. With college facilities, the hostel life is amazing. There is environment for every single thing and opportunities to create new. The quality of the students is best in India kudos to the selection procedure. The hostels are clean and highly spacious with lawns and have all basic amenities. With rising fees year after year, it is slowly getting out of reach for lower middle class, but loans are helpful. As Roorkee is suburban area, not much outside campus to boast about. Overall, one can say that it’s a great place for one to become something of importance; the right direction has to be chosen. You have all the gear brah! Just score!

I belong to a metro city but still I don't find Roorkee as a boring place as such. Yes, at times you might be get a little annoyed by not having huge mall to go for shopping or hang-outs, but then you have almost all the brands available in the market, which is just next to the campus. The campus is astonishing with James Thomson building (Main or Admin building) being a cherry top. The college provides you with the best of sports facilities (Yes, the best)

I found college really amazing, students are multi-talented, not only academic-centric but represent major sections of Society. College is also awesome, since it is in more of development mode so you you will get more opportunities to participate in betterment of college and get exposure to many real life problems, which will help you become a better person with good management skills.

About College:

The Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee (IITR), like the other older IITs has become synonymous with excellence. It is often remarked how in India, kids hear more about the IITs when they are growing up, than about their cousins, such is the rush towards reaching this very top. Lakhs of students from all over the country enrol themselves over countless hours of coaching classes in order to secure a seat among these IITs. Within this elite list of institutions, there is a super- elite sub- group known as the original IITs, which is a group of the 7 original ones which are – Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee.

Securing a seat at the IITs is done through a rigorous selection process involving the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). This is the largest entrance exam in the country in terms of numbers and possibly amongst the largest in the world. This paper is given by more than 12 lakh people annually. It is a 3- hour exam worth 90 marks constituting 3 segments with equal weightage. Those segments are- Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics. The best of the performers, totaling roughly 2 lakhs of them are further shortlisted for the JEE Advanced which is for selection to the IITs. The JEE Advanced is conducted over 2 rounds on the same day. The morning paper which runs from 9 am till noon is followed by a break and then another 3 hour one. The pattern however is not so well understood as the marks pattern is not clearly defined. It keeps changing annually. All this effort means that the acceptance rate is miniscule, standing at around 0.5% for IIT- Roorkee in stark contrast to global luminaries such as MIT, Stanford or UC Berkeley standing at 7.5%, 4.8% and 17.5% respectively. Admissions to the master’s level programmes is via the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering).

Unlike the other older IITs, the one at Roorkee has a slightly different history. In fact, it is the oldest having been established way back in 1847. That makes it the oldest technical institution in Asia. It got deemed university status exactly a hundred years later in 1947, before being upgraded to an IIT in 2001 by a Government of India ordinance. Due to this earlier university status, the number of courses being run at the IITR is greater than the usual sum for the IITs. There is the B. Arch as well as M. Arch, this being the first place in India to have the latter. A number of dual degrees are also available where entry is through the undergrad level. Beyond engineering, there are integrated degrees in science technology as well. Several master’s level programmes too are available. The MBA takes admissions through the CAT exam, now having let go of the earlier JMET. Specific industry- oriented PG diplomas may be pursued by sponsored industry candidates.

These academic programmes are executed by various departments, with specific expertise. These departments are – Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, Physics, Hydrology, Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Architecture & Planning, Electrical Engineering, Paper Technology, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Applied Science & Engineering, Polymer & Process Engineering, Mathematics, Management Studies, Water Resources Development & Management, Electronics & Communications Engineering, and the highly specialized Earthquake Engineering. Realizing its importance over the coming years, the IIT- Roorkee even has a specialized Humanities and Social Sciences wing. In addition, there exist specialized centres that cater to niche areas of research and development. There are centres for- Continuing Education, Alternate Hydro Energy, Nanotechnology, Transportation Systems, Disaster Mitigation & Management, Educational Technology, plus a few more.

Due to its immense reputation, the IITR has also been able to stitch together several strong institutional collaborations. Some key partners internationally include institutions from UK, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and even Sri Lanka. Several key alliances are also stitched out across India for knowledge collaboration and student exchange. Another area that receives a lot of important at the IITR just like some of the other IITs as well is entrepreneurship. Due to this reason, the TIDES (Technology Innovation & Development of Entrepreneurship Support) business incubator has been established It provides a framework to budding entrepreneurs to incubate their ideas.

All this has helped the IIT in Roorkee be featured very highly across most national or international rankings. It has been ranked the 6th in the country among engineering colleges by the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework), 9th in the management category and 8th overall. The highly- acclaimed QS World University Rankings places it at the 431-440 band for the world, 93rd for Asia and 51st among the BRICS nations. A lot of this has been possible due to the presence of its top- notch alumni network. As the IIT Roorkee has been associated with excellence for so long, placements have likewise been among the very best in the country. Some of the top recruiters have been the likes of – American Express, Bajaj Auto, Adobe, JP Morgan, Paypal, Rivigo, Intel, Huawei, EXL, HSBC, Qualcomm, Oracle, DE Shaw, Flipkart, Walmart and Tesco.
