The university was established in 2007 by the Parliament of India through the Central Universities Act (2009), Central University of Gujarat. The university is recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC). The Central University of Gujarat is commonly known as CUG and accredited by NAAC with a grade of ‘B++’. The university houses 11 schools namely the School of Chemical Sciences (SCS), School of Applied Material Sciences (SAMS), School of Education, School of Environment and Sustainable Development (SESD), School of International Studies (SIS), School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies (SLL&CS), School of Library and Information Sciences (SLS), School of Life Sciences (SLS), School of Nano Sciences (SNS), School of National Security Studies (SNSS) and School of Social Sciences (SSS).
As per the official website of the Central University of Gujarat, the motto of the university is to provide a global platform for knowledge and employability to CUG students along with society and industry interface. The university was ranked overall 60th in India and 2nd among all the universities in Gujarat in NIRF 2016 Rankings.
