Dr YSR Horticultural University, Venkataramannagudem is the second Horticultural University in the country. The University was established in 2007 to increase productivity, sustaining the productivity and commercialization of Horticulture in the State. The University is committed to developing the manpower and technologies so that it can resolve the problems confronting Horticulture and enable the horticultural farmers in Andhra Pradesh to make horticulture as the most remunerative enterprise. The mandate of the University is human resource development through education and research. The course curriculum for academic courses have been developed as per the recommendation of ICAR and focusing on the specific needs of Andhra Pradesh Horticulture.
The research programmes of the University have been reoriented into eight thrust areas which are based on the present-day need. These thrust areas include increasing productivity, sustaining productivity under biotic and abiotic stresses, improving nutritive value and food safety, environment protection, increasing profitability to farmers, and export promotion, minimization of post-harvest losses, and processing and value addition. The University receives the funds for research by the State Government and also by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The ICAR provides 75 per cent of funds for conducting research. The University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendras provide frontline Extension Services through technology assessment & refinement, frontline demonstrations, vocational training and other extension activities, which cater to the growing needs of the farmers. Dr.Y.S.R. Horticultural University has 7 Horticultural Colleges, 9 Horticulture Polytechnics, 17 Research Stations and 4 Krishi Vigyan Kendras in Andhra Pradesh.

Dr YSR Horticultural University, Venkataramannagudem offers courses in Horticulture at the undergraduate level, B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture, postgraduate level M.Sc. (Horticulture) with specialization in Fruit Science, Vegetable Science, Floriculture & Landscape Architecture and Spices, Plantation, Medicinal & Aromatic Crops. The University also offers Ph.D. in Horticulture and also Diploma in Horticulture is also offered at four Horticultural Polytechnics. Admission to the B.Sc (Hons.) Horticulture is through the ICAR quota, A P EMACET and HORTICET. Candidates applying through the ICAR quota have to apply to the AIEEA exam conducted by ICAR for the students from other states. Candidates of Andhra Pradesh have to appear for the A P EMACET in their respective local areas. EMACET declares the merit list as per the exam score, presidential order, region and social status. Candidates who have completed the two-year diploma course in Horticulture will be given preference in the admission as the 15% seats are reserved under HORTICET. HORTICET includes the candidates who have done a two-year diploma course in Horticulture from the University. The admissions to the postgraduate and Ph.D courses are based on the qualifying marks and entrance exams of the respective departments of the University.
