The Sido Kanhu Murmu University, Dumka (SKMU) was established in 1992 by an act of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. The university came under the Government of Jharkhand when the new state of Jharkhand was formed in the year 2000. The university has been granted recognition by the University Grants Commission (UGC). 

The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various streams and has 13 constituent colleges and 15 affiliated colleges across six districts of Jharkhand. The University offers courses in Arts, Humanities & Social Science, Commerce, Science, Management and Law. It also offers self-financing vocational courses. The University is relentless in its efforts in maintaining standards in teaching and research, ensuring character-building among the students and nurturing leadership in young men and women.
