Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) is a publicly funded institution dedicated to providing professional education, conducting fisheries research, and offering extension programs aimed at improving fish production and utilization. TNJFU follows the model and syllabi of State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) to achieve its mission.

In 2012, the Institute of Fisheries Technology was founded in Nagapattinam. Later, recognizing the increasing significance of engineering solutions in the fisheries sector, it was renamed as the College of Fisheries Engineering. This college is now an integral part of TNJFU and provides two undergraduate (UG) professional degree programs along with two postgraduate (PG) professional degree programs. The institution offers both UG and PG programs. 

TNJFU offers financial assistance to students through scholarships and fellowships for both UG and PG degree programs. Additionally, the varsity provides various student amenities, including gymnasiums, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, hostels, and a range of student-friendly resources such as computer labs, internet access, e-learning facilities, and dedicated student placement cells within university colleges. These amenities aim to foster students' interest in gaining knowledge in the field of fisheries science and help them secure suitable placements for their careers.

TNJFU is situated in Nagapattinam, a town located in Tamil Nadu. Nagapattinam is in proximity to several cities, including Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Pondicherry, Salem, Madurai, Dindigul, Ambattur, Chennai, and more. These cities are approximately 70 to 300 kilometres away from Nagapattinam. The University itself is situated just 8.5 kilometres from Nagapattinam.
