With a mission to further the advancement of high level learning and research on Tamil language, literature and culture, Tamil University Thanjavur offers PG, B.Ed, M.Ed, PhD, and M.Phil programmes. Tamil University, Thanjavur was established in 1981 and believes in inculcating professional values and ethical behaviour. To help students pursue their studies and work at the same time, Tamil University, Thanjavur also started the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE). This Directorate started its academic services from 2005-06 in various disciplines. However, in 2012-13, 29 new courses were introduced. Moreover, the University is planning to introduce new courses in the coming academic years.

Tamil University, Thanjavur facilities include gyms, a library, sports, an auditorium, Wi-Fi, and more for the students. The college has a Career Guidance and Counselling Cell which manages Tamil University, Thanjavur placements, and provides training to the students. NAAC accredits the college with a “B+” grade.
