Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication is a two-year post-graduate programme covering the broad discipline of media studies. It involves a theoretical understanding of the history, content and cultural impact of all types of media along with an applied learning focus in areas such as print, radio, television and new media, and their specific tools and techniques. With a skill based industry oriented approach the programme offers five areas of specialization. The students in the second year of the programme, based on their interest, can specialize in:

  • Radio and TV Journalism
  • Print Journalism And New Media,
  • Event Management
  • Social Media
  • Advertisement and Public Relations

Programme Educational Objectives

  • To introduce students to the various fields of journalism and mass communication
  • To facilitate the understanding of strategic application of evolving technologies in the field of Mass Communication and Journalism
  • To enhance the knowledge of students with regard to various disciplines of Mass Communication like advertising, journalism, public relations, photography and film making
  • To develop the use of research methodologies appropriate to the discipline of Mass Communications and Journalism

Programme Outcomes

At the end of the programme the students should be able to:

  • Develop a practical understanding of the underlying principles of Mass Communication and Journalism Industry
  • Demonstrate the ability to respond to design briefs through conceptual thinking, design work, media and other methods
  • Apply the learnings in print, broadcast and digital news reporting, editing etc.
  • Work on the various software and hardware used in the Mass Communication and Journalism industry

Programme Highlights

The curriculum is designed with the distinct objective to equip the students with knowledge, skills and attitude required in the present and emerging job market. The programme delivery comprises of a good mix of formal lectures, seminars, computer based learning, individual and group project work, guest lectures and industry training. Students under each specialization will be put through latest industry-relevant training. The School of Communication provides well-equipped layout and print designing labs and In-House Radio and TV studios for practical training.

Mass Communication Theories- history/models, Print Journalism, Advertising, Photography, Television and Radio Production and Writing, Convergent Journalism, Radio Production, Social Media, Public Relations, Film Making, Data Journalism.

Career Avenues

Graduates can make a successful entry in ten possible media disciplines. These include Print Journalism, Photo Journalism, Television Production and Writing, Web Journalism, Radio Production, Social Media, Public Relations, Advertising, Event Management and Film Making. They can also prepare themselves for a career in teaching and research.


Eligibility Criteria

Graduation in any field from a UGC approved university. In addition, candidates will also have to successfully complete a Goenka Aptitude Test for Admission (GATA) and appear for a personal interview.

Admission Details

  • Duly completed applications received will be verified for basic eligibility, academic performance and suitability for the course selected. Admit cards for GATA (Goenka Aptitude Test for Admission) will be issued to the eligible candidates. Application sent through courier/post must be received in the admission office 10 days prior to the GATA. GATA will be held at designated centers and the date of the examination shall be communicated.
  • GATA is to access the capability and ability of the candidate in terms of analytical, logical reasoning, mathematical, scientific, English language and general knowledge
