Great Lakes - PGDM & PGPM Admissions 2027
Globally Recognized by AACSB (US) & AMBA (UK) | 18 LPA Avg. CTC for PGPM 2026
The XAT 2027 exam is scheduled for January 3, 2027, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The written exam will have 95 questions across Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR), Decision Making (DM), Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI), and General Knowledge (GK). The GK section has 20 questions, including 12 based on current affairs. The official XAT 2027 exam pattern does not include Analytical Essay Writing (AEW) as part of the computer-based test.
The essay component was removed from the written XAT exam in the recent pattern change. For XLRI's selection process, essay writing is assessed at the post-exam selection stage rather than as part of the written XAT paper. Candidates therefore need to continue preparing for essay writing along with personal interview and other selection-stage requirements.
The key change is that Analytical Essay Writing is no longer part of the written XAT 2027 exam. The current XAT paper consists only of four objective sections: VALR, DM, QA & DI and GK.
For XLRI, essay writing is handled during the selection process for shortlisted candidates. This means candidates targeting XLRI should not drop essay preparation simply because it has disappeared from the computer-based test.
Earlier Format | XAT 2027 |
Essay was part of the written XAT format | Essay is not included in the 95-question written test |
Candidates wrote the essay during the exam | XLRI assesses essay writing during the post-exam selection process |
Essay preparation was part of written-exam preparation | Essay preparation is now relevant for shortlisted candidates |
Essay and MCQs were handled in the same exam | Written XAT and institute-level selection stages are separate |
Important: This change should not be interpreted as a common GD/PI format for all XAT-accepting B-schools. Each institute can set its own selection criteria, which may include GD, PI, WAT/essay, case discussions or other components.
For XLRI, Analytical Essay Writing is part of the post-XAT selection process rather than the written examination. The essay is used to assess how candidates understand an issue, organise their thoughts and present a clear viewpoint.
For other B-schools accepting XAT scores, the process can be different. Some institutes may conduct GD and PI, while others may use WAT, case-based discussions or other selection components. Candidates should therefore check the admission criteria of each institute separately instead of assuming that the XLRI process applies to every XAT college.
Essay writing, XAT group discussion and personal interview test different skills. A candidate preparing for XLRI should be ready to demonstrate both written and verbal communication during the selection process.
Aspect | Essay Writing | Group Discussion | Personal Interview |
Format | Written response | Group-based discussion | One-to-one interaction |
Communication | Written | Verbal | Verbal |
Focus | Clarity, reasoning and argument | Ideas, listening and participation | Profile, academics, goals and awareness |
Response Style | Structured and concise | Clear and spontaneous | Direct and conversational |
Current Affairs | Useful for developing arguments | Useful for discussion topics | Useful for answering opinion-based questions |
Personal Profile | Limited | Usually limited | Important |
Key Preparation | Writing practice and reading | Discussion practice | Profile revision and mock interviews |
Do not stop essay preparation after the written XAT. Practise writing 200–250 words on business, social, economic, technological and abstract topics.
For example, take a topic such as “Does artificial intelligence create more jobs than it replaces?” Instead of simply writing your opinion, build the response around:
A clear introduction
Two or three relevant arguments
A counterpoint
Examples or facts
A balanced conclusion

Test centres are available in 70+ cities across India | 75,000+ aspirants apply for the NMAT exam | Accepted by 58+ institutions like NMIMS, KJSIM, ISB, SPJIMR and Great Lakes.
The aim is to show that you can understand an issue from multiple perspectives rather than simply take a position.
For the XAT PI, revise everything you mention in your application and be ready for follow-up questions.
For example:
Q. Why do you want to pursue an MBA?
Do not rely on a memorised two-minute answer. The interviewer may follow up with:
Why MBA at this stage?
Why XLRI?
Which management area interests you?
How does your work experience support this decision?
What do you plan to do after an MBA?
Prepare the reasoning behind your answers so that you can handle follow-up questions naturally.
The XAT 2027 GK section has 20 questions, of which 12 are from current affairs, but current affairs preparation also helps with essay writing, GDs and interviews.
For each major issue, note:
What happened?
Why did it happen?
Who are the stakeholders?
What are the possible benefits and concerns?
What could be the long-term impact?
For example, while preparing AI and employment, understand AI adoption, automation, reskilling, productivity, job displacement and the new roles being created.
A good GD practice session should not involve simply speaking for two minutes. Ask a partner to challenge your viewpoint.
For a topic such as “Should India prioritise economic growth over environmental protection?”, prepare arguments on both sides. During the discussion, practise:
Entering the discussion without interrupting
Adding a new point
Supporting a previous speaker's argument
Disagreeing politely
Responding to a counterpoint
Summarising the discussion
PI questions can move from general questions to specific academic concepts. Revise important subjects from your graduation and be ready to explain projects, internships and work experience mentioned in your application.
For example, a commerce graduate may be asked about inflation, accounting or financial ratios, while an engineering graduate may face questions about their core subject or final-year project.
Your answers about MBA, career goals and work experience should connect logically.
Prepare answers for questions such as:
Why MBA?
Why now?
Why XLRI?
What are your short-term career goals?
What are your long-term goals?
Why have you chosen your preferred specialisation?
How will an MBA help you achieve these goals?
Avoid memorising model answers. Focus on understanding your own decisions and experiences.
Instead of memorising topic lists, understand the key arguments, examples and recent developments within each area.
Topic Area | What to Study |
Business & Economy | GDP growth, inflation, interest rates, startups, manufacturing, employment, taxation and India's economic policies. |
Technology & AI | Generative AI, automation, AI and jobs, data privacy, cybersecurity, deepfakes and AI regulation. |
Social Issues | Women in the workforce, education, digital divide, social media, work-life balance and skill development. |
Environment | Climate change, renewable energy, EVs, sustainability, pollution and the balance between growth and environmental protection. |
International Affairs | Major global conflicts, India's foreign relations, trade, supply chains and India's role in global institutions. |
Abstract Topics | Success and happiness, discipline and talent, freedom and responsibility, failure and learning, technology and creativity. |
Practise discussing and writing on topics such as:
Can AI replace human creativity?
Is economic growth possible without environmental costs?
Should companies prioritise employee well-being over productivity?
Does social media strengthen or weaken democracy?
Is failure necessary for success?
Should India focus more on manufacturing or services?
Can technology solve the education gap?
For each topic, prepare arguments for, arguments against, examples and a balanced conclusion.
XLRI's selection process considers more than the XAT score. Its admission documentation has stated that, apart from XAT performance, factors such as academic background, relevant work experience, extracurricular activities and performance in personal interviews and/or group discussions may be considered. The exact criteria can vary by programme and admission cycle.
Therefore, XLRI aspirants should prepare across four areas:
XAT performance – Focus on VARC, DM, QA & DI and GK.
Essay writing – Continue practising structured, concise responses.
Personal interview – Prepare academics, work experience, career goals and personal profile.
Current affairs – Follow major business, economic, social, technological and international developments.

On Question asked by student community
Hello Student, exam-centre availability can change depending on the live slots shown during the XAT application process. I would suggest checking Chikkaballapura directly in the test-city selection before completing the application. If the city is not appearing, it may mean that the centre is unavailable or not offered for that

The IRMA XAT 2026 cutoff is expected to be in the range of 55 to 60 percentile for ST category candidates. At an XAT score of 47 percentile, it is unlikely to get a PI call for the IRMA MBA admission 2026.
