Hi

A biodiversity hotspot is defined as  the biogeographic  regions which have very high levels of species richness and also high degree of endemism.  The term biodiversity hotspot actually refers to 25 biologically rich regions around the world which have lost at least 70 percent of their original habitat.

India is considered as a mega biodiversity hotspot because :-

  • It hosts 4 biodiversity hotspots which are-
Himalayas,
the Western Ghats,
the Indo-Burma region and
the Sundaland (Includes Nicobar group of Islands).

So, our India is the home of large variety of flora and fauna, but as the population is extremely high, and along with rapid urbanization , it has led to the threatening of habitat loss of such diverse flora and fauna.
Thus, India is known as the mega biodiversity hotspots in the world.
