The Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), as the name suggests is located in Chennai, which is the state capital of Tamil Nadu. It was founded in the year 1989 by the Science Foundation of the SPIC (Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation Ltd.). And that is why early on, the CMI was known simply as the School of Mathematics, SPIC Science Foundation. Initially, the UG and PG programmes here were affiliated to the Bhoj Open University located in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (MP). For the PhD. it was the Madras University, that was the awarding authority. But from 2006 onwards, the CMI has been recognized by the UGC (University Grants Commission) as a Deemed University, with autonomy in decision making. It occupies a plot worth five acres of land in Tamil Nadu.
The CMI has been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council) with an A grade rating. As the name suggests, the focus of the institute has been towards the study of mathematics, but also the other fundamental sciences. As the CMI was initially instituted for research purposes, it had a PhD. programme in place before its undergrad ones. Thus, the doctoral programmes in Mathematics and Computer Science have existed here, right since inception. The BSc. degree was added here for these two courses in 1998, and the year 2001 saw the starting of MSc. programmes for these two. In 2003, the BSc. programme was started for Physics. Admissions to these programmes is via an entrance test held by the CMI. Uniquely for a formal educational institute in India, students who ace the Indian National Mathematics Olympiad or the Indian National Physics Olympiad qualify directly for a seat here at the CMI.
The institute has long believed in intellectual collaboration. This is why, several agreements have been tied up for research collaboration, internships for students and on knowledge sharing with other leading educational institutions. Such ties exist with the likes of TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research) in Mumbai, IGCAR (Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research) in Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu) and the IMSc. (Institute of Mathematical Sciences) in Chennai. It also curates the International Olympiad in Informatics in collaboration with the IARCS (Indian Association for Research in Computing Science).
There is a thriving campus life here at the CMI. Tesselate is the name of the annual inter- college fiesta held here. Substantial corporate funding is received for the same. Sports and tech events hold key here. There is also a social initiative for the underprivileged kids of Chennai. All this and much more has reflected handsomely on the college rankings. The Careers 360 magazine for instance has placed the CMI at rank 25th among all universities in India, with an overall AAAA grade rating.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Convenience stores and banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. The CMI is also reasonably well- connected by public transport. Basic facilities are there for some indoor sports. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
Careers360 shortlists over 5000 colleges across domains each year. Out of these colleges, only those colleges are rated/ranked which provide transparent data requested by Careers360. The cumulative scores of colleges are then calculated and they are divided into clusters as per their scores. Careers360 ranks private and government colleges separately as the support system of both types of Institutions is completely different.
