The Desh Bhagat University (DBU) is located in the town of Mandi Gobindgarh. This town is in the Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab. It was first established in the year 1972. The DBU is named after its founder, Shri Lal Singh Ji, who was even awarded the Tamra Patra by the Government of India, in recognition of his efforts in the country’s independence movement. Besides the first campus in Fatehgarh Sahib, the DBU also has other campuses in the Union Territory of Chandigarh and Shri Muktsar Sahib, also in Punjab. An international campus is there in the East African nation of Kenya. The DBU has been recognized as a full- fledged university by the UGC (University Grants Commission). The AIU (Association of Indian Universities) also recognizes the same.
Several of the technical courses taught at the Desh Bhagat University, are ratified by the respective accrediting body. Thus, the relevant courses are accredited by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), PCI (Pharmacy Council of India), NCHMCT (National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology), INC (Indian Nursing Council), CCIM (Central Council for Indian Medicine), PNRC (Punjab Nurses Registration Council), BCI (Bar Council of India) and the NCTE (National Council for Techer Education). The Desh Bhagat University has also been placed within the 151- 200 band in the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework) for universities. Its 165th rank is also equivalent to the 2nd highest position among private universities within the state of Punjab.
A huge variety of options are on offer, here at the Desh Bhagat University, right from the UG till doctoral levels. The entire academics here, is administered by a group of 21 faculty areas. Each of the faculty areas, are in turn divided into departments. One of the largest here, is the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. It constitutes the departments for the areas of- Robotics, Information Technology (IT), Machine Design, Nano Technology, Aeronautical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Food Technology Industrial Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Micro Electronics, Production Engineering and for Electronics & Communication Engineering.
The related Faculty of Applied Sciences comprises of the Departments for Mathematics, Chemistry and Applied Physics. There is also the unique Faculty of Ayurveda and Research. It administers programmes on areas such as Yogic Science, Naturopathy and in Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery. This faculty area comprises of the two departments of- Rasa Shastra and Kaya Chikitsa. Another is the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. A total of 21 subject areas are dealt with, here at the DBU. They are for- Agriculture, Applied Sciences, Ayurveda, Dentistry, Design, Business Management, Law, Language, Library Science, Medial Sciences, Engineering, Hotel Management, Nursing, Performing Arts, Pharmacy, Para Medical Sciences, Social Sciences and in Computer Science & Application. The School of languages offers programmes in English, Sanskrit, Hindi and Punjabi.
A unique contribution at the Desh Bhagat University is the Faculty of Industry Integrated Programmes. Several industry- oriented diplomas and certifications are available here. The diplomas may be pursued in the areas of- textile, agriculture and Ophthalmic Medical Science. The certification could be in App Development and Financial Literacy. Research- oriented M. Phil and PhD. courses may also be undertaken by the students from across the branches here. A lot of effort is made by the university to equip foreign students to get the best of education here. For them, an English bridge programme has been initiated. So, a course has been curated titled International English, for those not from English- speaking countries. This course is divided into levels of Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma. Grammar and writing skills are the main areas of focus here.
Research plays a key role in the lives of the students at the Desh Bhagat University. A separate Research Development Cell has thus been curated over here. To this end, several journals are published on campus, with the objective of chronicling the research findings, by both the faculty as well as the students. One of the journals is Prabodh: International Journal of Humanities & Social Sciences. Another is Edu- Psycatia: International Journal of Education and Psychology. The other two emanating from here are the- International Journal of Business Management & Research and the International Journal of Scientific & Technical Development.
There is a thriving on- campus life here. Several clubs and cells are there to engage the students and to bring out their best of creative juices. There are clubs or cells for- Dance, Music, Community Service, Marketing, Finance, Rangoli Art, Creative Writing, Debates, Mehndi Design, Photography, Pot Painting, Cooking, Dramatics, Software Development, Entrepreneurship, Leadership Development, HR, Bizz, Health & Yoga, Literary, Red Ribbon, Eco, Sports and for Art & Craft. The DBU has has also always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value.
