The CV Raman College of Engineering (CVRCE) is located in Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Odisha. It was established in the year 1997. The CVRCE is affiliated to the Biju Patnauk University of Technology (BPUT). The BPUT is named after the former Chief Minister of the state, and located in the city of Rourkela. This affiliation ensures that the CVRCE is approved by the UGC (University Grants Commission). Further, it has also been accredited by both the NBA (National Board of Accreditation) and the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council). It has earned the A grade distinction in the latter. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results.
The CVRCE is also among the few institutions in the country to have earned an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certification. Some of its courses have been ratified by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). Courses are available at the CVRCE right from the UG till the doctoral levels. The college is named after Dr. C.V. Raman, who was India’s first Nobel Laureat in Physics and known for the Raman Effect. At the undergrad level, the B. Tech degree is on offer for a number of engineering programmes for the areas of- Civil, Chemical, Marine, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics, Computer Science Information Technology and in Electronics & Telecommunication. At the master’s level, the courses get more technical, and research- oriented. They may be availed in the areas of- VLSI System Design, Signal Processing, Power System, Heat Power and in Mechatronics.
In addition, students here may also opt for an MBA. Some research- based MSc. programmes are also on hand here. One is in Applied Physics and the other being in Applied Mathematics & Computing. The entire academics at the CVRCE is run by a cohort of twelve departments. These are for the various academic programmes mentioned already. Admissions to the undergrad programmes is via the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) at the national level, or the state level OJEE (Odisha Joint Entrance Examination). At the master’s level, it will be the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) in charge of selections. The OJEE also has a PG version which will be for MCA selections. MBA selections will be via the MAT (Management Aptitude Test).
Research is another key part of this college. That is why several Centres of Excellence (CoE) have been curated here. Some of the CoEs have been set up with external help from some of the leading corporates. Some of these companies and industry bodies involved in such research on campus are- Siemens, Bosch, Google, Festo, HVAC & R, IAPMO and TRTC. Welding, plumbing and robotics are some of the areas explored on these. Short term certifications and training sessions are also provided by them. The CVRCE has also been quite proactive to international education. For this purpose, an International Education Cell (IEC) thrives on campus.
To further the research credentials of the CVRCE, several new products have been developed on campus. Titanium and graphene have been used for them. The institute has also been granted a patent for three of its discoveries. There is a separate publications wing. Here, several books have been published. A lot of faculty contributions have also made it to prestigious national and international publications. The CV Raman College of Engineering from Bhubaneshwar has also been involved in several consulting assignments with industry bodies. Some of the key agencies that have funded and provided research assignments have been the DST (Department of Science and Technology), Institution of Engineers, SERB (Science and Engineering Research Board), NALCO (National Alumni Company Limited), JNARDDC (Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development and Design Centre), CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research), MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) and the BRNS (Board of Research in Nuclear Science).
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The college even has its own transport to ferry students to and from the campus. There is even a large parking lot for those students who wish to drive to campus. A mini departmental store is also located within campus.
The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes. All this and more has led to the CVRCE being placed extremely high across ranking indicators. It has been placed at the 89th position among engineering colleges at the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework). The campus placements have likewise picked up. Some of the key recruiters in recent seasons have been the likes of- IBM, TVS, British Council, Wipro, Infosys, Tata Steel, Capgemini, Exilant and few more.
