However, the greatest, most pressing challenge here is undoubtedly the inherent lack of physical elbow room, as the college footprint is strictly constrained by its prestigious, highly central city location.

I feel the degree successfully builds a strong, basic base, but it unfortunately lacks vital contemporary flavour and dynamism in its content. The crucial laboratory equipment necessary for advanced Honours practical experiments was regrettably often obsolete, sometimes even non-functional when needed by the students. Classroom space for large lecture batches often felt incredibly cramped and uncomfortable, especially during peak academic sessions throughout the year. The library itself possessed an adequate collection of books, but the attached reading room felt consistently overcrowded and poorly ventilated. Overall, the physical campus environment was tired, aged, and certainly required a significant and urgent investment.

I must admit, the absolute standout feature of the entire experience was without doubt the genuinely high standard of teaching within the entire Physics Department. The core faculty professors were intensely dedicated, deeply knowledgeable, and possessed a tangible passion for teaching the subject matter with great enthusiasm. They placed a consistent and necessary emphasis on cultivating strong conceptual clarity and developing rigorous, disciplined problem-solving abilities in all the students. This solid, unwavering approach perfectly prepared us for tackling the difficult University of Calcutta examinations with confidence and competence. While the system for internal assessment and marking sometimes felt slightly opaque, the comprehensive syllabus coverage was always delivered effectively and on time.

If I must be completely honest about the situation regarding placement during my tenure, especially for the pure Science stream, there was essentially no dedicated career cell or proactive employment guidance. The explicit focus of the college administration was almost exclusively directed towards preparing graduates for pursuing higher academic degrees, such as Master of Science programs or eventual research, post-graduation. No significant corporate entities or recruiting firms actively visited the campus specifically targeting Science Honours graduates while I was studying there before 2018.

The overall campus atmosphere was certainly welcoming, generally friendly, and possessed the typical, familiar characteristics of an active undergraduate college in Kolkata at the time. The student body was consistently enthusiastic in organizing several cultural activities, college week celebrations, and important annual functions, fostering a sense of community pride. The small but central college ground served perfectly as the main social hub for students to congregate and relax during their lecture breaks and free periods. While the canteen facilities were very basic and utilitarian, they reliably provided affordable and decent meals throughout the academic day for everyone. Unfortunately, the total absence of a dedicated, proper open green space or a spacious college field greatly limits opportunities for comfortable, relaxed outdoor gatherings. I often find students utilizing the nearby street food stalls and busy park benches for social interaction and necessary academic collaboration immediately after classes end. Participation in various departmental clubs, such as the debate or film society, is absolutely essential for fully integrating into the college's limited social fabric.

Infrastructure is actually pretty decent. Classrooms, labs, library, everything is there and the equipment is in proper working condition. Labs are used regularly so nothing is just lying around for show. Wi-Fi works fine most days. Hostel rooms and common areas are clean, so that’s nice. Only issue is the mess food… it’s honestly not that great and gets boring very fast. If they improve the food, overall experience would be much better. Otherwise the campus feels comfortable and easy to live in.

I am studying Electronics and Communication Engineering. The overall teaching is okay but the main issue is the syllabus. Since we follow AKTU, a lot of the syllabus feels outdated and not aligned with what is currently happening in the industry. Some subjects are useful, but many topics are old and not really relevant to modern ECE technologies. The teachers try their best, but we mostly end up studying theory instead of practical or hands-on learning. It would be much better if the curriculum was updated and more focus was given to real-world applications and projects. Right now, it doesn’t really feel like it makes us fully job-ready.
Placements
I am still a student right now so I haven’t personally gone through the placement process yet. From what I’ve seen and heard from seniors, the placements are average. Some companies do come for recruitment, but the number of core ECE opportunities is limited and many students end up sitting for IT or service-based roles. The highest packages usually go to CS/IT students. The placement cell does try to help, but you have to work on your skills on your own too. So, overall placements are okay, not the best, but not zero either.

Honestly, the infrastructure of MERI surprised me when I first joined. The classrooms are bright, clean, and have smart boards that make lectures a lot more interactive. The library is literally my go to place before exams- it's super quiet, has comfy seating, and so many books that i never had to loo elsewhere for notes. The computer labs are well - maintained, and the Wi-Fi actually works ( which you don't find in every college). The auditorium and seminar hall are great for events - We've had some amazing guest lecture there. The canteen food is good, not 5- star but totally fine for college life, and the hygiene level is decent too. I also love how green and open the campus feels. Overall, it really gives that college vibe where you can study, hang out, and feel comfortable.

Since I joined MERI, the placement cell has been quiet visible and active. From about third or fourth semester onwards we were introduced to placement - prep activities - mock interviews, resume workshops, and chances to attend company talks. What this meant for me; by the time my final year arrived, i already had a clear sense of how to present myself and what recruiters expected. In terms of quality of placements: From several student - review and officials info, the placement rate across batches has hovered around 70-90% in many cases. For example, one source mentions 80% placed for some courses. The highest packages offered range up to about 12.80 lakhs per annum in some records. Typical average packages for many students seem to lie in the ballpark of 3-5 lakhs per annum, expecially for the UG courses. Company visits include a mix of major firms and smaller recruiters , and roles are often in sectors like marketing, sales, HR, IT support and business opportunities.

However, since the campus is compact, wed do sometimes wish for more open and green spaces or larger sports areas.

We have qualified lecturers but sometimes they fail to convey their point of view. We celebrate the college fest every year. Here, our faculty conducts exams very strictly and in my course, pass percentage is 79%. They take care of students in every way. especially girls.

75% of students were placed in my course. The highest package is 8 LPA, the lowest package is 3.6 LPA and the average package is 5 LPA. Wipro and Infosys are the top recruiting companies. 15 students remaining got internship in Accenture, Tech Mahindra Assistant engineer and sub engineer are the best roles selected for the companies from my college.
