Starting from the first year itself start practicing data structures and algorithms problems from geeksforgeeks, codechef, hackerrank, etc. Solving those problems will make you well versed in coding. Then you will be able to crack any software company. So start focusing on coding problems.

Yes you can get a job in software companies but will need to have good knowledge of computer languages, and its operation.

Many companies such as TCS does not consider the branch as even mechatronics students are working at TCS. But there are chances that you will need to apply for off campus placements.

Keep in mind that it is totally different than civil engineering and you must manage extra time to learn coding and other things.

But i would suggest you to get into any core company as civil engineer as you will have good salary and better growth.

Either way, there has been a decent number of core positions recruited despite a dull market. Every CSE guy would obviously be securing a 'core' job so can't compete with them in this.
