During the Eleventh Five- Year Plan, there was a proposal put forward for the created of several more central universities, to tackle the shortage of quality higher education. It would also lessen the financial burden which was being created thanks to the burgeoning of private education. The proposal was then accepted and the decision was taken for the creation of twelve more such central universities, all in different states. These new central universities would come up in the states of – Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Odisha, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Rajasthan. In addition, three more existing universities in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand were to be upgraded to central university status. Admissions to all these universities is via the Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET). Special provisions here are also made for the admission of foreign students.
The Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) in Ranchi was established in 2009. Its permanent campus is getting built, but right now classes are taking place at a temporary location. Courses here are imparted from across the UG level till the doctorate. The academics is handled by specific schools. These schools are further divided into departments. There are nine schools in total here. The biggest of them here is the School of Natural Sciences. It has the departments for – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Life Sciences and Computer Science & Technology. Another big one is the School of Engineering and Technologies. Within this, the courses that can be taken up are- Nano Technology, Energy Engineering, Water Engineering & Management and Transport Science & Technology. Another important one in this context is the School of Cultural Studies, of particular significance in Jharkhand. The departments here are those for – Tribal Studies, Performing Arts and the Contemporary & Tribal Customary Law. Then there is the School of Languages. The departments here are for – Hindi, English Studies and for Far East Languages such as Chinese, Tibetan and Korean. A very important school in the present context is the one for Humanities & Social Sciences. This includes departments for International Relations, Humanities & Social Sciences and for Human Rights & Conflict Management. Besides these, there are smaller schools for- Management Sciences, Mass Communication & Media Technology, Education and Natural Resource Management.
The CUJ is also extremely proactive when it comes to research. That is why, there is a Centre of Excellence for Green and Efficient Energy Technology. The university is equally concerned about the students’ ability to work in the present digitized world. That is why certain courses have been uploaded over the university’s online portal. The free online education portal is Swayam, which is an MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource and Development) initiative. The CUJ is also a subscriber to the Swayam Prabha, which is a group of TV channels for the purpose of disseminating educational content. The university is also a signatory to the NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning). It is also a part the National Academic Depository (NAD) which stores high- quality academic content for future usage. It collates information from across sources within the country’s academic and research circles. The Library is also connected to the National Digital Library. This helps students and the faculty access academic publications from across the world. Digitally uploaded journals from almost anywhere can now be viewed right from this university’s campus in Ranchi itself. Several courses are available on the MOOCs platform of the university. A lot of spoken tutorials have also been recorded for the benefit of the students.
There is a thriving student community within the university. Several events are held year- round, by the respective student clubs and committees. Energia is the student group focused towards the propagation and use of renewable energy. Several workshops are conducted to spread this message. Khelotsav is the annual sports meet. A youth festival is also organized. Another major event here is the NAVADHAR.
