Radiotherapy is a therapy using ionizing radiation. It is generally used as part of cancer treatment. In simple terms, the radiation is used to kill or control the growth of malignant cells in a specific part of the body or organ. The radiation alters the DNA structure of the malignant cells. Thus, it kills or restricts the growth of such harmful cells. The radiation causes slight damage to normal cells and organs. Radiotherapy is abbreviated as RT, RTx or XRT. It’s full form is Radiation Therapy. Radiotherapy is commonly used to treat and cure cancer. Apart from that, it is also used in treating non-cancerous diseases. Radiotherapy procedure to be carried out on a patient is planned and charted by a qualified Radiation Oncologist. But he/she is usually assisted by qualified Nurses and Radiotherapy technicians.
