The university was established on 6th September 1994 by an Act of Parliament No. 35 of 1989 as a central university in Nagaland. More than 30 colleges are affiliated to Nagaland University some of which are Alder College, Kohima, C Edge College, Dimapur, Capital College of Higher Education, Kohima, Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research, Dimapur. Nagaland University is recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC).
