What is Environmental Studies

Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary course including topics from various subjects like geology, physics, chemistry, biology, ecology, earth science and many others. The course focuses on the environment and different processes that take place on Earth. Relevant issues of global warming, pollution, floods, earthquakes, waste management and sustainable development have been given a lot of importance in the course. Environmental Studies course is offered at different levels from UG, PG to doctoral programs. Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Environmental Studies

Eligibility Criteria for UG Courses:

  • Candidates must have passed 10+2 level examination with a minimum of 50 percent marks from a recognised board in India. Students may also have to sit for entrance exams as required by colleges or universities.

Eligibility Criteria for PG Courses:

  • Candidates must have graduated with not less than 55 percent from a recognised college or university in India. Students may also be required to give entrance tests if conducted by colleges or universities.

Eligibility for Doctoral Program:

  • Candidates must have passed their post-graduation exams with not less than 55 percent aggregate marks in a related field from a recognised college/ university in India.
  • Entrance exams may be taken by colleges/ universities.   

Environmental Studies Entrance Examinations -

1. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Entrance Examination: JNU is one of the biggest universities in India, and it is famous for its wide range of post-graduate courses. JNU takes entrance exams for M.Sc. and doctoral programs in Environmental Studies.

2. Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Entrance Examination: Banaras Hindu University is a very popular university for its courses in India. It offers M.Sc. in Environmental Studies and in order to get admission, students are supposed to appear for the BHU entrance examination.

3. Forest Research Institute (FRI) Entrance Examination: FRI Entrance Exam is a state-level examination that is written to get into postgraduate courses including M.Sc. in Environmental Studies in FRI Dehradun.

4. Indian Institute of Science (IISc): IISC is one of the most reputed institutes in India offering various science courses, including environmental studies. Admission into the institute is done on the basis of JEE Main, JEE Advanced or KVPY. No separate entrance examination is conducted.

The eligibility criteria for pursuing Ph.D in Environmental science requires a candidates to
have passed M.Sc. or M.Phil in Environmental Science or other related fields.He should have passed from a UGC recognized University with 50% marks in aggregate. Candidate with M. Phil/CSIR-UGC/JRF/NET/SLET cleared in the relevant subject is exempted from University level entrance test.
