    XAT 2027 Exam Pattern Overview

The XAT exam consists of 95 questions divided across four sections: Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR), Decision Making (DM), Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI), and General Knowledge (GK). The first three sections are used for the overall percentile, while GK is considered separately in the selection process.

XAT Preparation: Section-Wise Weightage and Priority

A section-wise approach is essential for an effective XAT study plan because each section requires a different preparation strategy. Understanding the question distribution and priority of each area helps aspirants allocate study hours effectively. This XAT preparation strategy can also help students structure their XAT preparation in 120 days.

XAT Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning: Preparation Priority

The Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR) section contains 26 questions and requires a strong combination of reading comprehension, verbal ability and logical reasoning skills. Reading comprehension generally forms a substantial part of the section, so regular passage practice should be a core part of your XAT 120 day study plan.

    Key areas to cover:

    • Reading Comprehension

    • Critical Reasoning

    • Para jumbles

    • Vocabulary

    • Grammar and verbal ability

    • Inference-based questions

    Priority: Very High

Spend around 25-30% of your total preparation time on VALR. Read at least 1-2 RC passages daily during the practice phase and gradually introduce timed sectional tests.

    XAT Decision Making: Preparation Priority

Decision Making is one of the most distinctive sections of XAT, with 21 questions in the current pattern. Unlike conventional aptitude sections, DM requires you to interpret a situation, identify relevant information and select the most appropriate course of action.

Your XAT preparation strategy should therefore include regular caselet practice rather than postponing DM until the final month.

    Key areas to cover:

    • Business and organisational caselets

    • Ethical dilemmas

    • Situational decision-making

    • Analytical reasoning

    • Data-based decision-making

    • Stakeholder-based questions

    Priority: Very High

Allocate approximately 25-30% of your preparation time to DM. Start with 2-3 caselets per week and increase this to several timed sets each week during the final 60 days.

XAT Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation: Preparation Priority

QA & DI has the highest number of questions, with 28 questions in the current XAT pattern. The section covers mathematical concepts as well as the ability to interpret and analyse numerical data.

For XAT preparation in 120 days, begin with arithmetic because its concepts are useful across several types of questions. Once the fundamentals are strong, move towards algebra, geometry, numbers and DI sets.

    Key areas to cover:

    Priority: Very High

Dedicate approximately 30-35% of your study time to QA & DI. Aim to solve 20-30 questions during concept-building days and progressively shift towards timed mixed sets.

    XAT General Knowledge: Preparation Priority

The GK section contains 20 questions and is treated separately from the sections used for the overall XAT percentile. Although it does not contribute to the overall percentile in the same way as VALR, DM and QA & DI, it remains relevant to the XAT selection process.

Instead of allocating several hours to GK at once, include it as a short daily activity in your XAT study schedule.

    Key areas to cover:

    • National and international current affairs

    • Business and economy

    • Government policies and schemes

    • Awards and honours

    • Sports

    • Important organisations

    • Books and authors

    • Science and technology

    • Static GK

    Priority: Moderate

Spend around 15-20 minutes every day reading current affairs and maintain monthly revision notes. During the final month, use these notes for repeated revision rather than trying to cover completely new sources.

XAT 120-Day Preparation Strategy: Four Phases

A structured XAT 120 day study plan helps you move from concept building to exam-level practice without rushing through the syllabus. Divide your XAT preparation in 120 days into four phases, with each phase having a clear target, study focus, practice method and measurable outcome for XAT 2027 preparation.

How Many Hours Should You Study for XAT in 120 Days?

If you are following an XAT 120 day study plan, aim for 3-5 focused hours of preparation on weekdays and around 5-6 hours on weekends. This gives you sufficient time to cover QA & DI, VALR, Decision Making and GK without creating an unrealistic routine.

In the first 30 days, spend more time learning concepts; during days 31-90, increase practice and PYQs; and in the final 30 days, prioritise mocks, analysis and revision. If you are preparing alongside college or a job, even 2-3 focused hours daily can work, provided your XAT study schedule is consistent and includes regular timed practice.

How to Use XAT Previous-Year Questions in Your 120-Day Plan?

XAT previous-year questions help you understand the actual difficulty, question framing and recurring concepts tested in the exam. Include them throughout your XAT 120 day study plan rather than reserving them for the final weeks..

    Start with Topic-Wise XAT PYQs

Do not begin your XAT study plan by solving complete PYQ papers immediately. During the first 30 days, use questions topic-wise after completing each concept. For example, after studying percentages, solve relevant XAT QA questions before moving to the next topic. Similarly, practise RCs after completing basic comprehension strategies and solve Decision Making caselets after understanding the question types.

This approach helps you check whether you can apply a concept to the way XAT actually frames questions. Maintain a separate PYQ notebook or digital record and mark questions as easy, moderate or difficult for later revision.

Use PYQs to Identify High-Priority Topics

After solving PYQs from multiple years, analyse which topics repeatedly challenge you. This becomes particularly useful while building your XAT preparation strategy, as preparation time should not be divided equally among all topics.

Track three things for every topic: number of questions attempted, accuracy and average time taken. For example, if you consistently struggle with arithmetic-based questions despite understanding the concepts, the problem is likely application or speed rather than conceptual knowledge.

Use this analysis to modify your XAT 2027 preparation plan. Spend additional practice time on topics where your accuracy is low or where you consistently take longer than expected.

Add Timed PYQ Practice from Day 31

From around Day 31 onwards, gradually move from untimed practice to timed PYQ sets. Instead of solving questions only to find the correct answer, set a time limit and practise deciding which questions deserve your attention.

For VALR, practise timed RC and verbal sets. For QA & DI, combine different topics so that you cannot predict the concept before reading the question. For Decision Making, solve complete caselets within a fixed time rather than analysing each question indefinitely.

During the middle phase of your XAT study schedule, aim to complete at least 2-3 timed PYQ sessions every week, increasing the frequency as you approach the final month.

Analyse Mistakes After Every PYQ Session

Solving a PYQ without analysing it limits its value. After every session, classify your mistakes into conceptual errors, calculation errors, misinterpretation, poor question selection and time-management issues.

For every incorrect question, write down why you made the mistake and what should have been done differently. Also revisit questions that you guessed correctly because these can reveal gaps in understanding.

This error log should become an important part of your XAT preparation strategy. Revisit recurring mistakes every 7-10 days and check whether the same error appears again in subsequent practice sessions or mocks.

Use Full-Length PYQ Sets in the Final 30 Days

During the final 30 days of your XAT preparation in 120 days, start using previous-year papers as complete timed practice rather than only as topic-wise exercises. Attempt them in one sitting and follow the same time-management approach you plan to use on exam day.

After each paper, compare your performance across VALR, DM and QA & DI. Record your attempts, correct answers, incorrect answers, accuracy and time spent on each section. GK should also be reviewed separately for knowledge gaps.

Do not simply count your score. Use every PYQ paper to refine question selection, sectional time allocation and accuracy before moving into the final mock-test phase.

XAT Mock Test Strategy: When Should You Start Taking Mocks?

Do not wait until you complete the entire syllabus to take your first XAT mock test. Include a diagnostic mock within the first 10-15 days of your XAT 120 day study plan to understand your current level, strengths and weak areas. During days 30-60, take one mock every 10-14 days, focusing more on analysis than scores.

From days 61-90, increase the frequency to 1-2 mocks per week and use sectional tests between mocks. In the final 30 days, attempt 2-3 full-length mocks per week, depending on your preparation level. Analyse every mock for accuracy, time management, question selection and recurring mistakes.
