The availability of complete genome sequences of humans and many important pathogens has given insights into many human disease mechanisms. The underlying genetic mechanisms in the pathogenesis of various infectious and non-infectious diseases have opened many avenues into presise molecular level diagnostic procedures. The recent spur in molecular level understanding of diseases has led to tremendous advancements in the field of disease diagnostics. Diagnosis of disease has become a more precise science involving a combination of genetic, proteomic and biochemical tools. The course is designed to teach the technology, theory and practical approaches of molecular genetic methods to the diagnosis and understanding of human disease. Students would be taught scientific approaches to identify molecular biomarkers, develop and validate diagnostic assays. They will work on a six month research project that would make them learn contemporary research methods to answer specific biomedical questions.
