The Chettinad Academy of Research and Education (CARE) is located in the Kelambakkam block of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. It covers a total area of thirty- three acres of land, established in the year 2005. Since 2008, the CARE has been given the status of a Deemed University by the UGC (University Grants Commission). CARE has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council) with an A grade rating. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results.
The Chettinad Academy of Research and Education was established by the Chettinad Group, which is a conglomerate headquartered in Chennai, and spread out across industries. Some of these industries covered by the group include- logistics, power, cement, coal, plantations, education and healthcare. The name pays homage to the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu.
The academics here is divided into several units. The flagship medical programmes are run by the Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute. It constitutes the Faculty of Medicine. At the UG level, of course, the main course is the MBBS, which is the essential qualification to all aspiring doctors. There are a far greater number of options at the PG level. These may be divided in to the Clinical, pre and para clinical courses. On completion of the Clinical courses, students may be awarded either an MD, M. Ch or an MS. The programmes that may be pursued here are for- General Medicine, Anaesthesiology, Radio- diagnosis, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Urology, Neurology, Neuro Surgery, Neonatology, Medical Gastroenterology, Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgery and for Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Another option here, is for Dermatology, Venerology and Leprosy.
The Chettinad College of Nursing is another really important one. At the UG level, there exists the four- year BSc. in Nursing. The MSc. in Nursing may be pursued from among five fields which are in- Medical Surgical Nursing, Child Health (Paediatric) Nursing, Mental Health (Psychiatric) Nursing, Community Health Nursing and for Obstetrics & Gynaecology Nursing. The related MSc. in Nursing with specialization in Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Nursing can be undertaken at the Faculty of Medicine. This also provides a Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Clinical Embryology aimed at working professionals, aiming at skill enhancement. One of the biggest advantages for aspiring medical and healthcare professionals to enrol at the CARE is that a hospital is attached right next to the medical college. This allows the students to get hands- on experience observing, practitioners among doctors, nurses, surgeons and administrators.
Another important department here is the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. It provides UG programmes in five main areas. A BSc. is earned for these in the areas of- Medical Biotechnology, Medical Genetics, Counselling Psychology, Medical Bio- nanotechnology and in Allied Health Sciences. While the first four are the usual three- year programmes, the last one mentioned has a mandatory, year- long practical training, on- field. There are also two- year MSc. programmes offered here. Some are the fundamental ones, while others are part of the allied health sciences. The programmes on offer under the former category here are for- Medical Biotechnology, Marine Pharmacology, Bioinformatics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Medical Bio- nanotechnology, Medical Genetics & Molecular Diagnostics, Human Nutrition, Clinical Research & Experimental Medicine, Health & Yoga, Occupational Health & Industrial Safety, Computational Biology and in Counselling Psychology. The MSc. in Allied Health Sciences may be availed here for the areas of- Radiology & Imagining Science Technology and in Echocardiography & Cardiovascular Imaging Technology.
Yet another mode of study here at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences is through the five- year Integrated MSc. programmes. There are six options for such programmes. These are in- Cardiac Technology, Perfusion Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Renal Dialysis Technology, Respiratory Care Technology and for Radiology & Imaging Science Technology. Research is another key part of the CARE. The focus areas for the same include- Tele medicine, native medicine, stem cell biology, human genomics, nanotechnology and point of care diagnostics besides a few others.
Ethics is another important area here. Hazardous waste disposal and institutional animal ethics are areas of key concern, so due steps are taken to ensure that the right practices are followed. The CARE has always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value. And that is why the students of this college have been active participants in government schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme) and the UBA (Unnat Bharat Abhiyan).
All this and much more has led to an all- round good performance across ranking platforms. It found itself ranked 126th all India among universities in the NIRF (National Institutional Rankings Framework). This has further reflected on healthy placement figures. The key recruiters at the CARE over the last few seasons, include the likes of- Apollo Hospitals, Cauvery Hospital, AIIMS, CMCH Vellore, Fortis, MIOT, CHRI, MMM, Rajagiri Hospital, Frontier Life Line Hospital, Vijaya Hospital, Saveetha Hospitals and Balaji Hospitals among others. Several ex- students are also working in foreign countries such as in UK, USA, UAE, Kuwait, Singapore, New Zealand and Canada.
