The Doon University was established in the year 2005. The first academic session began in 2009. It is so named, due to its Dehradun location, which lies within the Doon Valley. It is an open valley on the Shivalik sub- range of the Himalayas. The university is recognized by the UGC (University Grants Commission). It has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), whereby earning a B++ grade rating. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. The sprawling campus spreads over fifty- five acres of land in the state of Uttarakhand.
There are a few pure undergrad programmes here, with majority being either at the master’s level, or integrated ones. The UG programmes on offer here are the B. Com (H), B.A. in English and the B. Des. (Bachelor of Design). The last one mentioned is completely self- financed. There are some courses that operate on a pure master’s level as well. To start off, there is the MSc. in Environmental Science and another one in the same field, but with an option at a specialization in Natural Resource Management. An MSc. may also be undertaken Physics or Mathematics. There is also the M. Tech in Environmental Technology. Another is the M.A. in Media and Communication Studies. Two more options are the M.A. in Economics and the MBA. An MCA may be pursued under both the three- year or two- year modes. The latter is for lateral entrants.
An M.A. may also be pursued here from among several language options. These may be in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and in Chinese. The last one primarily hints at the Mandarin tongue. There are several integrated course options. They may be in the BSc. plus, MSc. combo or BBA and MBA or even with B.A. and M.A. The second one mentioned is self- explanatory for the management education. The last one meanwhile, may be undertaken for Spanish, German, Chinese, French, Japanese and for Media & Communication Studies. The BSc. plus, MSc. can be done up for Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science. Doctoral programmes are also here on offer. There are certificate programmes as well in several of the languages already mentioned, plus in Sanskrit.
The entire academics here, plus additional research is all run by a cohort of eight schools. Each of them possesses expertise in their own areas. These are schools in the areas of- Languages, Management, Social Sciences, Technology, Design, Physical Sciences, Environment & Natural Resources and for Media & Communication Studies. Two of these schools are further divided into departments. The School of Physical Sciences has departments for the areas of- Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science. The School of Languages has departments in it for- English, German Studies, Japanese Studies, Chinese Studies, Spanish Studies and for French & Francophone Studies. Admissions to these various programmes depends on a combination of academic merit in the last level studied, plus from results of nationally or state- wise recognized entrance examinations.
The Dehradun University wholeheartedly participates in the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). It firmly believes in the concept of Swachh Bharat, Swasth Bharat. The university has taken steps to ensure that the internal Municipal Solid Waste Management is dealt with using flush toilets, so that the inhuman practice of manual scavenging may be put to an end. The university also abides by the “Go Digital Initiative” under the Vittiya Skasharta Abhiyan.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus has adequate computer and internet facilities. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. Departmental stores and public transport are easily accessible from just outside the campus. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes. The library is also a signatory to UGC’s E- Shodh Sindhu Consortium. It also has access to material of the Sage Publications and the NISCAIR (National Institute of Science Communication and Information) portal.
All student co and extra- curricular activities are handled by the Student Welfare Activities Cell. A student- initiated periodic college magazine is also released. It is known as Campus Bytes. The Placement Cell meanwhile takes care of campus recruitments. It conducts soft skills workshops, industry- academia interaction sessions, entrepreneurship seminars and career counselling seminars. All this has contributed to the university being rated at AAA by the Careers 360 magazine within the universities’ category.

The cumulative scores of colleges are then calculated and they are divided into clusters as per their scores.
