Before I start about the college, I want the budding lawyers reading this to know and to first decide what you really want from the college. Naturally, the focus of many will be on the placements and the ‘packages’ that one is offered after the completion of five ‘long’ years. It might also be that some will be searching for freedom that an institution offers. Some might even be interested in other directions such as civil services, academics and writing because law as a profession doesn’t restrict you to a single field. Also, some might haven’t yet decided and are still searching (those are the best kind). Then are the classic lawyers; driven on thirst for knowledge and working of the courts, preferring litigation. To all of the above I want to say that do think on your dreams before moving on and don’t stagnate; laziness is the worst enemy of a lawyer and it has in its power all the tools to bring you down the ladder.
Moving on, RMLNLU has in its power to give you everything mentioned above. Some might even prefer sports or modelling as a profession after entering a law college and RMLNLU has in its power to give you even that, obviously it isn’t a wand that you would flick and all your dreams would come true( what most/everyone thinks about ‘top’ law colleges). It requires you in exchange of your dreams; your efforts, hard work and consistency. It requires all of that which should be in you to get to your dream. Therefore, when you look for a Law college or in a Law college, make a road map of what you really want, let me say that again: What YOU really want! Let’s talk about RMLNLU now.
RMLNLU offers one of the best infrastructures among the NLU’s boasting of Centrally Air Conditioned Administrative Block, Academic Block, Well Equipped Library, Moot Court Hall, 3500 Capacity Auditorium and A Conference Hall. Campus wide internet facilities, 24 hour power back up, separate, comfortable hostels for boys and girls (which are not air conditioned), Residential facilities for over 150 faculty members and staff. In the sports department, we have an Olympic-size swimming pool, lawn tennis court, basketball court, football ground, an indoor sports complex offering badminton court, table tennis, gymnasium. The university offers a built in hospital and medical staff providing 24 hours ambulance service. Then we have the canteen and shops that provide with almost everything a student requires in day to day life. There is a separate bank branch in the college itself too.
Student run Committees are the lifelines of RMLNLU. The college has a total of 6 student run Committees including The Journal Committee, The Moot Court Committee, The Cultural Committee (TEHZEEB), The Legal Aid Committee, The Debate and Discussion Committee, The Internship and Placement Committee and The Sports Committee. Every committee has its annual flagship event in which each of them showcase the best which is EOS for the Journal Committee, named after the Greek Goddess of dawn, SCC Online International Media Law Court Competition for The Moot Court Committee, OHR for The Cultural Committee, RML National Mediation Competition for The Legal Aid Committee, RML Parliamentary Debate for The Debate and Discussion Committee, MANTHAN for The Internship and Placement Committee and AAVAHAN for The Sports Committee.
The thing that sets apart RMLNLU from other NLU’s is the liberty it has to offer which is ample for a student. It can make you if you are independent or break you if you are dependent. The ‘no boundations’ and unrestricted environment is loved by one and all. The campus is peaceful, lush and green although it doesn’t cover areas as large as the IIT’s and IIM’s do but still it’s more than enough for a peaceful environment. Lecture hours range start from 10:00 am to 3 or 4:00 pm with lunch break in between, the faculty is quite good and some are very well endowed with knowledge and the art of teaching, I won’t lie and tell you that the staff is amazingly good and the best I have witnessed, it has its own problems which I believe every NLU does. The problems which exist for the faculty are torn down or sorted by the students which are the backbone of this institute as everything or most of the things are student run.
Now, let’s come to the Debating and Mooting Culture of RMLNLU. The two committees involved are The Debate and Discussion Committee and The Moot Court Committee. People get a chance to go to moots and debates by showcasing their strengths in the Summer Grand Intra and the Winter Grand Intra for both moots and debates. The travel fee and the attendance missed are both compensated by the college when sending students for moots and debates. The debating and mooting culture isn’t certainly the best you’ll see in a NLU but it’s enough for you to excel if one has the will.
After reading all that I have written above, one might wonder is it all just paper talk or do we really have some achievements to our name, hence the following.
Recent debating achievements: Winners, D.R. Memorial British Parliamentary Debate, 2017 organized by PCTE Ludhiana.
Recent mooting achievements: Winners, 7th edition of Leiden Sarin’s International Air Law Moot Court Competition, 2016.
Sports: Winner at Virudhaka 2016, NLIU, Bhopal.
I hope I wasn’t biased. Thank you.
