Sardar Patel University, Balaghat was established under the Government of Madhya Pradesh. The university is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Bar Council of India (BCI), Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). SPU Balaghat lies over an area of 80 acres providing various academic and infrastructural facilities to the students and faculty members of the university including a library, transportation, hostels, health centre, and counselling services. The university has twelve schools associated with it namely the School of Engineering and Technology, School of Pharmaceutical Science and Research, Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Research, School of Agriculture Science, Technology and Research, School of Commerce and Management, School of Science, School of Education, School of Arts and Social Science, School of Library Science and Information Technology, School of Media and Journalism, School of Fashion Design and Technology, School of Law and Research.

Balaghat Railway Junction is the nearest railway station from the university which is located 13.3 km away and students can reach the campus in approximately 15 mins.
