MIDS Chennai Admission Process

Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS), Chennai, is a premier research institute and has an impressive record in social science research methodologies. The institute has doctoral and fellowship programs within fields of study on an individual basis to pool future researchers. At MIDS admission is pursued through a rigorous and competitive screening to show its commitment to academic excellence in a research-oriented education

Admission at MIDS is designed to bring out the best among the qualified and promising candidates for their research programs. Hence, admission to the institute typically employs a comprehensive evaluation of the applicant's academic background, research potential, and the extent to which he/she aligns with the institute's research focus areas. Doctoral programs require the submission of a research proposal as part of the selection process.

Application Process

The application process for the admission to programs at MIDS is as follows:

1. Research Proposal Submission: For Admission into Ph.D. programs, research proposals not exceeding 750 words have to be submitted by candidates. The proposal should indicate the research interest, objectives, and methodology to be considered.

2. Document Submission: Submission of the required documents for academic qualifications and other records. These documents are not specified, but are typical of the following:

  • Degree certificates and mark sheets of previous qualifications
  • Research proposal (for Ph.D. programs)
  • Letters of recommendation (if needed)
  • Statement of purpose
  • Any published work or research papers (if available)

3. Personal Interview: The shortlisted candidates are called for a personal interview. This is one of the most important steps in the selection process as it provides the institute with a chance to assess the research aptitude of the candidate, communicative skills, and linkage to the research areas of the institute.

4. Final Selection: The final selection of candidates is based on the evaluation of qualifications, research proposal, and performance in the personal interview.

5. Admission Confirmation: Students selected are informed and shall complete all admission formalities, including but not limited to, payment and verification of documents within stipulated timelines.

It should be noted that MIDS maintains a low intake (ten full-time faculty members), suggesting a particularly selective admission process. Therefore, the prospective students should be well prepared for each phase of the application process, taking special care in writing a strong research proposal and preparing for an interview.

Degree wise Admission Process

Ph.D. Programs (Social Development, Political Science, Economics): The chief fields of study for the Ph.D. program at MIDS are Social Development, Political Science, and Economics. Basically, all the admission processes for these doctoral programs are the same in nature. The selection is based on his qualifications, a research proposal (not more than 750 words), and a personal interview. Thus the most suitable candidates possessing exceptional research aptitude are selected for these programs.

Fellowship Programs (in Sociology, Political Science, and Economics): Besides the Ph.D. programs, MIDS offers fellowship programs in Sociology, Political Science, and Economics. Although there are no admission procedures specifically for these fellowship programs, it may be assumed that a similar selection process as that of the institute applies so that quality research output is guaranteed.
