    The Institute offers Ph.D programme in Biological Sciences is a full-time degree having a minimum duration of three years to a maximum of six years. Department of Biological Sciences offers research in the areas of Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Cancer Biology, Epigenetics, Plant Cell and Developmental Biology, Metagenomics, Systems Biology, Ecology, Evolution and Molecular Systematics.

    The first year comprises of rigorous course work wherein students can register for any course offered within IISER-Bhopal or through the National Knowledge Network (NKN) from other Indian institutions. The students may start their research project in their first semester or later based on their PhD advisers recommendation. The course work allows students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the concepts aiding them in their research. Subsequently, students are also evaluated for their suitability to pursue their PhD through several systems, including a comprehensive examination and a graduate seminar. In addition to being involved in research with a particular mentor, students are also motivated towards presenting their research work as departmental seminars and to publish their research findings in peer-reviewed international scientific journals and conferences. After successful completion of the research work, the thesis dissertation submitted by the student is evaluated by a panel of reviewers and is then recommended for the award of a PhD degree.


    Eligibility Criteria

    A. General Eligibility Criteria

    a) Minimum Educational Qualification with National Qualify Exam.

    • (4-years) Bachelor’s degree in Science/Engineering/Technology, or
    • Master’s or equivalent degree in science, or
    • Master's or equivalent degree in Arts/Commerce (or allied subjects)

    For qualifying degree at mentioned above candidates must also fulfil anyone of the following additional requirements below:

    • Valid GATE score
    • Selected through National Eligibility Test – UGC NET /CSIR/NBHM etc. including lectureship (Assistant Professorship)
    • Selected through a National level examination conducted by MHRD or its agencies /Institutions such as UGC/ IIT/IISER/IISc./IIIT etc.
    • Selected to appear in the NBHM PhD scholarship interview after having qualified the written exam in 2026. However, in order to gain admission, candidates must fulfil at least one of the requirements mentioned in Points a. - c. above.

    b) Minimum Educational Qualification Without National Qualify Exam.

    • Integrated M.Tech (5 Year’s Degree)
    • Those with B.Tech. from IITs or BS-MS from IISERs with CGPA/CPI more than 8.0 on a 10 point scale.
    • (4-years) B.Tech/BE with (2-Years) M.Tech/ME (4+2 Years)

    Note: In addition to general eligibility criterion, the applicants must also satisfy the eligibility criteria specified for the respective Departments. The department may also impose additional screening criteria if the number of applications are higher.

    B. Marks / CGPA / CPI requirement in Qualifying Degrees (listed above):

    1. Minimum of 60% marks or CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a 10 point scale (overall percentage/CGPA/CPI; not just in the majoring subject)

    2. A relaxation of 10% of marks, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, will on B(1) be allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD categories and 5% to OBC-NCL/EWS.

    If the transcript/grade sheet issued by the Institute/University reports:

    • Only marks: percentage will be considered
    • Only grades: CGPA/CPI will be considered. If CGPA/CPI is reported on any scale other than 10 (eg. 4 point/ 8 point scale), an equivalent CGPA/CPI will be calculated as per the following formula: CGPA/CPI in a 10 point scale = (CGPA/CPI Obtained×10)/PS PS = Point scale used by the Institute/University.
    • Both marks and CGPA/CPI: Percentage equivalent of CGPA/CPI, as indicated on the transcript/gradesheet, will be considered. The conversion factor must be available in the transcript/grade sheet/certificate issued by competent authority.

    Admission Details

    • Students should have a valid rank in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and/or have qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET)/Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Junior Research Fellowship (CSIR-JRF), University Grants Commission-Junior Research Fellowship (UGC-JRF) or other equivalent examinations.
    • Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview. Date of interview will be communicated to shortlisted candidates by e-mail and the same will be available on the Institute website.
    • TA will be paid to SC/ST candidates appearing for the interview as per Govt. of India norms.
