The Institute offers Ph.D in Data Science and Engineering programme with a minimum duration of three years, including course work and a maximum of six years. Extension beyond the above limits will be governed by the relevant clauses as stipulated in the Statute/Ordinance of the individual Institution concerned.

This PhD program in DSE is interdisciplinary in nature, where students from various backgrounds (science, engineering, humanities, medicine, etc.) can enrol in and pursue their dream of being a data scientist. As part of this program, we nurture young minds to develop intuition through rigorous coursework and hands-on sessions, including heavy code-based projects. The coursework includes various topics, from fundamental subjects (mathematics, statistics, computer programming, etc.) to advanced topics (machine learning, graph machine learning, deep learning, biometrics, computer vision, geospatial AI, natural language processing etc.). The curriculum of this program is designed to achieve these objectives so that students will be exposed to a broader range of fields than in more standard PhD programs while working with our faculty members. In brief, this PhD program in DSE will prepare students to become leaders in data science research and help them build outstanding careers in academia or industry. The key features of this program are as follows.

Eligibility Criteria

A. General Eligibility Criteria

a) Minimum Educational Qualification with National Qualify Exam.

(4-years) Bachelor’s degree in Science/Engineering/Technology, or
Master’s or equivalent degree in science, or
Master's or equivalent degree in Arts/Commerce (or allied subjects)

For qualifying degree at mentioned above candidates must also fulfil anyone of the following additional requirements below:

Valid GATE score
Selected through National Eligibility Test – UGC NET /CSIR/NBHM etc. including lectureship (Assistant Professorship)
Selected through a National level examination conducted by MHRD or its agencies /Institutions such as UGC/ IIT/IISER/IISc./IIIT etc.
Selected to appear in the NBHM PhD scholarship interview after having qualified the written exam in 2026. However, in order to gain admission, candidates must fulfil at least one of the requirements mentioned in Points a. - c. above.

b) Minimum Educational Qualification Without National Qualify Exam.

Integrated M.Tech (5 Year’s Degree)
Those with B.Tech. from IITs or BS-MS from IISERs with CGPA/CPI more than 8.0 on a 10 point scale.
(4-years) B.Tech/BE with (2-Years) M.Tech/ME (4+2 Years)

Note: In addition to general eligibility criterion, the applicants must also satisfy the eligibility criteria specified for the respective Departments. The department may also impose additional screening criteria if the number of applications are higher.

B. Marks / CGPA / CPI requirement in Qualifying Degrees (listed above):

1. Minimum of 60% marks or CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a 10 point scale (overall percentage/CGPA/CPI; not just in the majoring subject)

2. A relaxation of 10% of marks, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, will on B(1) be allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD categories and 5% to OBC-NCL/EWS.

If the transcript/grade sheet issued by the Institute/University reports:

Only marks: percentage will be considered
Only grades: CGPA/CPI will be considered. If CGPA/CPI is reported on any scale other than 10 (eg. 4 point/ 8 point scale), an equivalent CGPA/CPI will be calculated as per the following formula: CGPA/CPI in a 10 point scale = (CGPA/CPI Obtained×10)/PS PS = Point scale used by the Institute/University.
Both marks and CGPA/CPI: Percentage equivalent of CGPA/CPI, as indicated on the transcript/gradesheet, will be considered. The conversion factor must be available in the transcript/grade sheet/certificate issued by competent authority.

Admission Details

Students should have a valid rank in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and/or have qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET)/Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Junior Research Fellowship (CSIR-JRF), University Grants Commission-Junior Research Fellowship (UGC-JRF) or other equivalent examinations.
Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview. Date of interview will be communicated to shortlisted candidates by e-mail and the same will be available on the Institute website.
TA will be paid to SC/ST candidates appearing for the interview as per Govt. of India norms.
