The four-year-long Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) in Graphic Design programme is offered only at National Institute of Design Ahmedabad.

We have been witnessing a dramatic change in the way a graphic designer works. The rapid changes in the way communication is happening in the recent context of technological advancement has made through the understanding of graphic design much more important than ever before. This programme prepares students to take on all new context challenges and technological advancements in the field of Visual Communication and especially in Graphic Design domain.

Paradoxically, traditional skills have become more necessary than before. Quality and creative solutions contextual to the user’s needs are still a basic human input. The fundamental importance of creating a visual vocabulary through drawing, the development of aesthetic judgment, values of form, proportion, image, and word have become an integral part of learning graphic design at NID.

During their period of study, students in graphic design are encouraged to work on a variety of projects, majoring in the selected sub-domain of graphic design. The areas covered include typography & type design, publication design, image making, illustration, photography, packaging, print design, corporate identity, branding, information & communication systems in the digital domain as well as analogs medium.

A graphic design student, in addition to a thorough grounding in design abilities and theoretical aspects, undertakes the study of the cultural and historical context in which designers need to function, as well as of the social and ethical factors that influence design decisions. The ultimate aim is to stimulate the development of independent critical judgment, sound research skills, the ability to think creatively and practice design as a professional.

Eligibility Criteria

Age Limit:

● For Indian Nationals in General Category and General EWS Category: Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 2003 are eligible to apply for admission.

● For Indian Nationals in Reserved Category (Other Backward Class-Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST): Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 2000 are eligible to apply for admission.

● For Indian Nationals in PwD Reserved Category: Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1998 are eligible to apply for admission.

● For Foreign Nationals in Overseas (Supernumerary) Category: Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 2003 are eligible to apply for admission.

Educational Qualification:

Examinations considered equivalent to these are as follows:

● Final examination of the 10+2 system under a Central or State Board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities

● Intermediate or two-year pre-University examination under a Board or University recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.

● Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.

● Senior Secondary School examination under the National Institute of Open Schooling, with a minimum of five subjects.

● Any public school, Board or University examination completed in India or in any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities.

● H.S.C. vocational examination.

● General Certificate Education (GCE) examination at the Advanced (A) level taken in London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka.

● AICTE-approved three-year Full time Diploma after Class X offered by Board of Technical Education of any state in India or Union Territories as mentioned on

● Candidates who have completed final examinations for class XII (or equivalent) outside India or from a Board not specified above should produce an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination conducted in India. Admission Details

Admission to all of the design courses is on the basis of the candidates’ performance in the two-stages of Design Aptitude Test. The objective of these exams is to assess the knowledge, skills and behavioral abilities of candidates.

College Infrastructure

Love the fact that the spaces in our studios are very mobile, can be changed as per course requirements. Very open, students gets ample working area for individual projects as well and personalisation of your space is permitted which makes it more student friendly. It's a cohesive environment and the labs too are well equipped with trained professionals to guide the students. Hostel rooms are also well maintained as per government standards and the mess food is also pretty decent.
