Great Lakes - PGDM & PGPM Admissions 2027
Globally Recognized by AACSB (US) & AMBA (UK) | 18 LPA Avg. CTC for PGPM 2026
Doing CAT and XAT preparation together can feel overwhelming, especially when both exams demand strong performance in Quantitative Aptitude, Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension and Data Interpretation. However, the overlap between the two exams makes it possible to prepare for both without following two completely separate study plans.

XAT 2027 is scheduled for January 3, 2027, from 2 PM to 5 PM. The registration window opened on July 15, 2026, and is scheduled to close on December 6, 2026. The XAT 2027 paper will have 95 questions across Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (26), Decision Making (21), Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (28), and General Knowledge (20).
For CAT aspirants, the biggest advantage is that much of the preparation already done for CAT can be carried forward to XAT. The major additions are Decision Making, XAT-specific question practice, General Knowledge, and mock-test strategy.
The first step is to understand where your preparation can serve both exams.

Since just 90 days are left for the exam, candidates must follow a proper XAT 3 month preparation strategy to ace it. We have divided the XAT 2027 preparation plan into three stages as mentioned below:
Days 1-45: Build and strengthen the common CAT-XAT base
Days 46-70: CAT-focused revision and XAT-specific preparation
Days 71-90: XAT-focused preparation after CAT
Globally Recognized by AACSB (US) & AMBA (UK) | 18 LPA Avg. CTC for PGPM 2026
Test centres are available in 70+ cities across India | 75,000+ aspirants apply for the NMAT exam | Accepted by 58+ institutions like NMIMS, KJSIM, ISB, SPJIMR and Great Lakes.
The exact number of days available may vary depending on when a candidate starts. Therefore, the plan should be treated as a framework rather than a rigid calendar.
During the first half of the preparation cycle, CAT should remain the primary focus if you are appearing for both exams.
Spend approximately 75-80% of study time on CAT-aligned preparation and reserve 20-25% for XAT-specific areas.
The reason is simple: Quant, VARC, LR and DI preparation contributes to both exams.
Build your preparation around the major CAT topics:
Arithmetic
Algebra
Data Interpretation
For XAT, do not stop at concept learning. Practise questions that require multiple concepts or lengthy calculations because XAT QA and DI can test application and interpretation.
A useful daily target during this phase can be 20-30 quality Quant questions, depending on your preparation level.
VARC preparation has significant overlap between CAT and XAT. Reading should be a daily activity rather than something reserved for mock-test days as per your XAT 2027 study plan. Aim for 2-3 RC passages a day initially, followed by detailed analysis of why each option is correct or incorrect or practice with CAT VARC sample papers.
For XAT, also include unusual RC formats such as poems, cartoons and other forms of passages because the official XAT syllabus specifically mentions these formats.
Candidates should regularly practise: hyperlink relevant article/ebook
Reading Comprehension
Para Jumbles
Para Summary
Odd Sentence
Critical Reasoning
Vocabulary
Grammar
Inference-based questions
LR and DI preparation should continue alongside CAT preparation. Focus on set selection. In both CAT and XAT, knowing which question or set to leave can be as important as knowing how to solve it.
Instead of solving only individual questions, practise complete sets as per CAT LIDR sample papers involving:
Tables
Bar graphs
Pie charts
Caselets
Arrangements
Games and tournaments
Selection and distribution
Networks
Venn diagrams
The second phase is where XAT-specific preparation should become more visible. Continue your CAT mock tests and revision, but increase Decision Making practice.
The section contains caselets based on personal and professional situations. Candidates need to evaluate information, identify constraints and choose the most appropriate course of action. XAT 2027 is expected to have approximately 21 XAT Decision Making questions.
Practise different types of caselets, including:
Ethical dilemmas
Workplace situations
Business decisions
Resource allocation
Employee-related situations
Conflicting interests
Prioritisation problems
The aim is not to memorise a formula. Instead, analyse the facts given in the caselet and avoid bringing unnecessary assumptions into the situation.
A good approach is to solve 2-3 Decision Making sets daily during this phase.
After solving each set, review:
Why was the correct option appropriate?
Why were the other options unsuitable?
Did the option introduce an assumption?
Did you ignore any information given in the caselet?
Was the decision practical and consistent with the situation?
GK does not require the same preparation intensity as Quant or VARC, but ignoring it completely is not advisable.
XAT 2027 includes 20 GK questions, with the official pattern indicating approximately eight questions from static GK and 12 from current affairs. GK carries no negative marking and does not contribute to the overall XAT percentile, although it is considered in the selection process for XLRI programmes.
A practical strategy is to spend 15-20 minutes daily on GK instead of attempting to cover everything during the final week.

Focus on:
Business and economy
National and international events
Government policies
Awards
Books and authors
Sports
Science and technology
Important organisations
Important appointments
Static GK
Major national and international developments
Make short revision notes. Avoid creating hundreds of pages of GK material that become difficult to revise.
Once CAT is over, your preparation should change significantly.
You no longer need to spend most of your study hours preparing for CAT-specific sectional performance. The focus should shift towards XAT.
A possible daily distribution is:
Activity | Suggested Time |
Decision Making | 1.5-2 hours |
QA & DI | 1.5-2 hours |
VALR | 1-1.5 hours |
GK | 30 minutes |
Mock/sectional analysis | 1.5-2 hours |
Revision | 30-45 minutes |
The exact schedule should depend on your strengths and weaknesses.
Mock tests become extremely important during the final 20 days. Start with 2 XAT mocks per week, then increase the frequency based on your performance and analysis capacity.
Do not take a mock merely to obtain a score.
After every mock, classify questions into four categories:
Correct and confident
Correct but time-consuming
Incorrect due to conceptual weakness
Incorrect due to poor judgement or question selection
This classification helps identify the real reason behind a low score.
For example, if your Quant accuracy is high but you spend too much time on difficult questions, solving more basic Quant questions may not solve the problem. Your actual issue is question selection and time management.

On Question asked by student community
Hello Student, exam-centre availability can change depending on the live slots shown during the XAT application process. I would suggest checking Chikkaballapura directly in the test-city selection before completing the application. If the city is not appearing, it may mean that the centre is unavailable or not offered for that
