72 MonthsPh.D in Sociology is the minimum and maximum period of study and research shall be three (3) years and Six (6) years respectively from the date of registration of the candidate.
The doctoral program in Sociology aims to build researchers who are intellectually independent and can generate original research that is theoretically, analytically and empirically robust. As such, given our recognized strengths in social theory, urban studies, migration/transnationalism, medical anthropology, social stratification, gender and sexuality, population aging research, sociology of art, family sociology, and health inequality research, we strongly believe that the Sociology doctoral program can train researchers to be methodologically pluralist and fully aware of the critical debates in their field of research.
The program will equip students with comprehensive, broad-based training along with major approaches in Sociology. In-depth learning of core ideas/debates in sub-fields of sociology will be offered along with robust training in research methods to assist students in conducting independent research. Following the completion of coursework, students are expected to focus on their doctoral thesis; ethnographic fieldwork, data collection, survey research. As their dissertation progresses, students are expected to collaborate with their advisors/peers, publish journal articles and/or book chapters and present their work in conferences, seminars & professional meetings.
We believe that the capacities and skills students will acquire in this program can and should be deployed in a wide range of careers across multiple contexts, including public and private agencies, non- and for-profit organizations, and colleges and universities.
Applicant should have a Master’s degree in Sociology, Political Science, Culture Studies, Social Work and Policy, Human Development, Public Health or any allied discipline with at least an overall “B” grade or 55% at the Master’s level.
Please note that the University Doctoral Committee shall be the final decision-making authority on decisions related to all the above-mentioned matters.
