About College

The group of institutions collectively known as the National Law Universities (NLUs) now number over twenty. For long, law lagged behind several other professional and degree courses when it came to prestige and career opportunities, but now, thanks to the NLUs, it is considered a top career choice. With the opening up of the economy, law grads can now take up careers in corporate law, international agencies, NGOs, Legal Process Outsourcing (LPOs) firms and academics, besides the conventional careers centres around litigation and the judiciary. This was the reason for the launch of the five- year integrated programmes by the NLUs which can be taken up by students immediately after completion of their school.

The Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU) in Shimla was established in the year 2016. This had initially resisted being part of the CLAT exam for selection to the courses, preferring to go with its own HPNLET (Himachal Pradesh National Law Entrance Test). But from the 2019 admission season onwards, it has joined the ranks of NLUs recruiting students using the CLAT. The test includes 200 objective type multiple choice questions to be answered within a maximum time limit of 120 minutes. These 200 questions are divided into Legal Aptitude and GK hogging half the total share with 50 questions each. English and Reasoning are worth 40 each while math which is quite elementary is worth 20. For every wrong answer, a fourth of negative marks gets deducted.

Courses are available at the HPNLU at both the UG as well as PG levels. At the UG level, the flagship five- year integrated programme BA LLB is offered. The LLB, of course, is the standard degree offered to Common Law countries’ legal study graduates. At the master’s level, the LLM is offered here. It is a one- year programme with six optional specialization areas for one to choose from. These are in the areas of – International & Comparative Law, Constitutional & Administrative Law, Corporate & Commercial Law, Criminal & Security Law, Legal Pedagogy & Research and in Family & Social Security Law. Several optional seminar courses are also on offer here.

Research is an important area of concern at the HPNLU. The institute is working on several research projects. In addition, a newsletter gets published periodically within the campus. The e- Pathshala has been instituted to increase the level of online learning among the students, so crucial in the ongoing digital age. The HPNLU is also extremely proactive when it comes to inking deals with foreign institutions for collaboration on student exchange programmes or for sharing of research findings. The Yerevan State University in the eastern European country of Armenia is the collaborator with the HPNLU Shimla. As part of the guest lecture initiative, there is the regular occurrence known as Friday Dialogues where some industry or government experts visit the campus and share their real- world experiences with the students. A strong student interface prevails in these. In spite of the relatively short duration, the institute has made a strong impression on rating agencies. This is why, the Careers 360 magazine has tipped the HPNLU at AAA rating.

Kashish juneja Student Expert 31st Jul, 2019

i would say amity law school Noida is better than HPNLU. It is a very popular college As compared to HPNLU. Also the infrastructure is very good. The faculty is well experienced and helpful. The college provides a lot of exposure and opportunities to the students.

What should I choose for BA LLB? NLU Shimla or Jamia Millia?

Mahima Student Expert 28th Jul, 2019
Jamia Milia is an established institute. It is based in Delhi and hence it has a great locational advantage in terms of internships and placements with District courts, high court, supreme court, and many good law firms and lawyers in the same city. Colleges like Jamia Milia etc are doing better than these lower Tier NLUs and you cant expect the same for NLU Shimla. So I would suggest you to not just dig the NLU tag but rather go for Jamia because as of now it is doing much better than lower NLUs. As of the the faculty, other placement/ internship opportunities and other opportunities will be better than NLU Shimla.
Best of luck

Which one is a better option for law: NLU SHIMLA or VIPS DELHI?

Asuri Sai Preethi Student Expert 25th Jul, 2019

Hi Candidate,

I suggest you to choose VIPS Delhi over NLU Shimla. It has an impressive rating of 4.2/5. There is free Wi-fi for the students to surf the internet . All the classrooms are well maintained with good infrastructure and air conditioned. There are well maintained sustematic libraries.

Placements:The students get placed in some of the top firms or under some experienced advocates or clear the judicial services exams. Some of the top firms like Larsen and toubro, vanish associates, luthra and luthra, Chitley and Chitley. Some advocates also come to recruit like Mr Ram jethmalani, Mr Goal subramanium, Mr A. S. Chandok.

All the best

My AIR is 6573 I have applied for vacant seats in nlu shimla is there any chance I might get it or in any other nlu in vacant seats general

Mahima Student Expert 8th Jul, 2019
The cut off for admission in any of the National Law Universities through CLAT in the previous year was a rank in the range of 1600 for the general category. Considering that your rank is 6573, your chances are less.

Usually there are vacancies in the lower NLUs as people leave their seats for other colleges. You might have less chances even then. Usually a rank under 3000 is safe for admission under Vacanies.

Though chances are less i would still suggest you to apply for it as firstly there is no harm in trying and also because this year there have been quite a large number of vacancies among different NLUs.
Along with HPNLU other NLus like NLu raipur etc also have vacancies you can check their official websites too.
But along with it i would also suggest you to not only rely on this and also find another back up option in case you don't get selected because  your chances are quite less.
Other than colleges with their own entrances, There are various Private Colleges that accept CLAT scores other than the National Law Universities.
