NIT Manipur was established in the year 2010 from its temporary campus at Government Polytechnic situated in Takyelpat, Imphal, with only three branches in the field of engineering, namely, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. The National Institute of Technology has been shifted to its permanent campus located in Langol, Imphal in Manipur. NIT Manipur has secured 95th rank in NIRF Ranking 2023 under the engineering category. The university has added two more engineering branches after 2013-2014 like Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The varsity is constructed on a spacious area of 341.5 acres of land and is well-equipped with all the modern facilities and infrastructure.
50% of seats in NIT Manipur have been reserved for the students residing in Manipur, while the other 50% are reserved for students belonging to other states. The nearest railway station to Imphal is Dimapur, which is at a distance of about 210 km from the university. There are no railway facilities that directly connect Imphal to other stations; one can take a bus to Dimapur railway station and then travel further through railways. The nearest airport is the Imphal National Airport, which connects many metropolitan cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. One can reach the university from Guwahati, Aizawl, and Silchar also by taking a bus that connects to the NH 38 highway.
Sports Club: The Sports Club of NIT Manipur is responsible for the organisation and management of the annual sports festival of NIT Manipur. The members of the sports club invite participants from nearby colleges and universities to compete with each other in different sports like volleyball, basketball, football, cricket, badminton, table tennis, etc.
Cultural Club: The cultural club of NIT Manipur is in-charge of planning and conducting the annual cultural and technical festival of NIT, Manipur- Ougri. The cultural club also shoulders the responsibility of conducting events to celebrate important days like teacher's day, engineers day, independence day, etc., on the campus.
Robotics Club: The Robotics Club of NIT Manipur encourages students who are interested in robotics and its mechanism. Various activities are performed by the students to learn the advancement in Robotics and its allied fields. Inter-collegiate events are also held in the university by the robotics club.
NSS: The NSS provides young students practical experiences to offer community service and help to develop society for its betterment. The NSS committee of NIT Manipur organises many activities and drives like tree plantation drives, cleanliness drives, blood donation drives, etc., to help society.
NCC: The National Cadet Corps is the official youth wing of the Armed Forces of India. This initiative is undertaken by the varsity to teach the students the values of cooperation, discipline and give them training for joining the armed forces.
Central Library: The central library of NIT Manipur is divided into two sections: one in the temporary campus in Takyel and another in the permanent campus of Imphal. The centralised library currently comprises 24 444 volumes, study materials, books, editions, textbooks, exam solutions, etc. The students can browse the e-library of NIT Manipur through their personal credentials provided to them.
Common Computer Centre: The common computer centre of NIT Manipur is installed with modern and updated computer sets. The Common Computer Center is fully air-conditioned and is furnished with advanced infrastructure. The computer sets are also updated with software programmes and applications that can be used by the students to perform practical activities as well as perform experiments.
Hostels: The varsity offers hostel accommodation facilities for both girls and boys who have been admitted to the university for various educational programmes. There are currently two hostels reserved for the accommodation of boys, and one hostel accommodates girls. At present, the university has limited seats available for hostellers, but in the coming years, the varsity is planning on the expansion of hostels. The university provides an application form for students who want to avail themselves of hostel services provided by the NIT Manipur. The hostels are well-equipped with all the common facilities and basic amenities that are required on a regular basis.
Laboratories: The NIT Manipur has constructed laboratories for particular departments to conduct research activities as well as experiments, which will result in gaining a thorough knowledge of their course. Departments like Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, etc., have different laboratories for various subjects for conducting practical sessions. The laboratories are furnished with all the modern equipment and devices which are used to conduct experiments and research programmes.
Medical Facilities: The NIT Manipur offers medical services to the students, faculty members, and staff members of the varsity. The medical unit of the university comprises paramedical staff and doctors who are present on campus 24*7. In case an emergency occurs, there is a provision of shifting students to different medical institutes like Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, and JNIMS, Imphal, which are located at a very short distance from NIT Manipur.
Transportation Facilities: Transportation facilities are made available to the students of NIT Manipur to travel from the permanent campus to the temporary campus. The varsity offers private bus facilities or private vehicles to visit the temporary campus in Takyel.
Banking and Post Office Facilities: To cater to the banking needs of NIT Manipur, a branch of the State Bank of India is functioning the campus premises of NIT Manipur. ATM machines of the State Bank of India and ICICI are also situated on the campus. Post office facilities are also offered to the students.
Sports Facilities: The NIT Manipur offers indoor and outdoor sports facilities to the students considering the importance of physical well-being and mental health. Sports like volleyball, basketball, cricket, chess, badminton, table tennis are played by the students for which adequate equipment is provided by the institute.
The course list of the university includes 22 programmes in total. National Institute of Technology Manipur courses are offered in engineering, management, research etc. streams. B.Tech, M.Tech., M.Sc. and Ph.D degree courses are offered by the university. NIT Manipur courses are offered in regular mode.

Admission for B. Tech programmes in NIT Manipur can be secured after qualifying the JEE Main entrance examination and seat allocation counselling rounds of JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority). The students have to select NIT Manipur as their foremost preference, and if they meet the merit requirement of NIT, Manipur, they will be admitted to the university after going through the document verification process and payment of fees for the first semester of their programme.
For admission in M. Tech programmes in NIT Manipur, the students have to secure qualifying marks in the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) examination. Preference would be given to students who have successfully obtained the required merit score in the GATE examination. If the seats remain vacant after admitting all the GATE candidates, the department conducts a written examination for students who are interested in pursuing the Master's in Technology at NIT Manipur.
For admission in Ph.D. programmes, the candidates must possess an M. Tech/ MS (R) degree in the relevant specialisation or similar discipline with a minimum of 60 per cent marks or 6.5 CGPA. Students who have scored a CGPA of 9.0 or equivalent to 85 per cent marks in B. Tech are also eligible to apply for Ph.D. programmes in NIT Manipur along with a valid GATE score.

Its campus spans more than 300 acres. It has 70 faculty members, the majority of whom are PhD holders and highly qualified.
