Physics and mathematics provide the foundation for understanding the physical world, and engineering applies this knowledge to build tools for practical use. However, as engineering devices begin to probe the limits of the possible in terms of miniaturisation, efficiency, computation speed, etc, domains like quantum mechanics and statistical physics play an increasingly important role in engineering design. Designers of "quantum computers," for example, need to know their physics as well as electrical engineering.

While conventional engineering physics programmes gear students towards either engineering or physics careers, Ahmedabad University empowers students with the choice to take courses in physics, mathematics, and engineering disciplines like Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, etc. The programme prepares a cohort with a deep knowledge of physics and mathematics, training them to apply these concepts to various areas of engineering. The physics training would be crucial for innovation in emerging technologies.

Students will complete courses in physics on topics such as classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and statistical mechanics as part of their core training. They will take multiple mathematics courses and study engineering subjects like thermodynamics, engineering materials, electrical circuits and electronics, product design, and sensors and instrumentation. The theory courses will be supplemented by extensive computational work and laboratory training. Additionally, students can take about six courses in physics or engineering, depending on their inclination, and do a capstone project or industry project in their final year.
