Sambalpur University was established on 1st January, 1967. The University was later shifted to the permanent campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla in 1973. Sambalpur University is affiliated to 206 colleges. Sambalpur University Institute of Information Technology (SUIIT) is also a part of the Sambalpur University which is located inside the same campus which was established in 2010. The University was first established with only three departments in Science and four departments in Humanities but, currently the University runs twenty-two postgraduate departments inside the University campus. The University provides undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and doctoral programmes related to different streams.

Cultural Society- The Cultural Society of Sambalpur University conducts all the cultural activities including dance, song and drama competitions and events at the inter-department, inter-college and inter-university levels. The Cultural Society also conducts the ‘Natya Jyoti Mahotsav’ every year among the postgraduate departments of Sambalpur university and the members of the society also take part in various programmes conducted inside the University campus.
The Odisha Environmental Consciousness Society (OECS)- The Odisha Environmental Consciousness Society (OECS) of Sambalpur University is a voluntary organisation that was established in 1982 with its headquarters at the School of Life Sciences. Sambalpur University provides various facilities for the students, staff and faculty which include Library, Hostels, health centre, internet facility etc. Detailed description of the facilities provided by the University is listed below.
- Library- Behera Central Library of Sambalpur University was established in 1970. The library has a huge collection of books, national and international periodicals, reports and thesis etc which provides necessary information and knowledge to students and staff. The textbook reading room section of the library remains open from 8 am- 8 pm and the other sections remain open from 11 am- 5 pm on all working days.
- Hostels- The hostels for postgraduate students are named as Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Bhagirathi and Satadru, Mahodadhi for M.Phil/PhD scholars and Narmada, Silver Jubilee and Prabhavati Devi Ladies Hostels for P.G/M.Phil/PhD programmes. Students are allotted hostels based on the vacancy of seats. All students need to make the necessary fees payment for hostels to get allotment in time. All the hostels are provided with a mess facility which serves a wide range of cuisines. All the hostels are also provided with internet/WiFi facilities.
- Health Centre- The Health Centre of Sambalpur University, Sambalpur provides any kind of medical treatment to the students and staff of the University. The health centre is provided with trained medical officers and nurses which provides medical services to students and staff when needed. All the pathological investigations are done by the pathology lab of the health centre.
- Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC)- HRDC of Sambalpur University conducts various activities like classes on Yoga, pedagogy on the improvement of undergraduate teaching, value education, academic administration, research methodology, SPSS workshops, environment management, restructure of course curriculum at the undergraduate level, ICT components, seminar presentation, project work and evaluating best three participants, etc.
