Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram, India, is one of the oldest institutions in the field of Ayurveda educational training and research activities founded in 1889. This affiliated college is situated in the thick of city of Kerala and hailed by the Central Council for Indian Medicine (CCIM). The college is situated over an area of 18 acre and has the total student intake of 559 and has a total teaching staff 69. It teaches 24 courses under five degrees involving different aspects of the Ayurvedic system of medicine. Rich history and continuity of practice in Ayurvedic system makes the college one of the premier institution for imparting education in traditional medicine system in India.
Government Ayurveda College offer facilities which may include classrooms, computer labs and dining halls as part of infrastructure that aids learning for student of the college. It has a separate hostel facilities for Boys & Girls for out station students where they can live comfortably. They have the use of internet connection in their campus and therefore enjoy an easy access to the internet facilities. Notable among infrastructural achievements is the college library which was acclaimed to be one of the most developed Ayurvedic medical libraries in the country. It is completely self-service and is packed full with valuable information for student and scholars alike. It also provide well equipped laboratories for practical purposes, an auditorium to conduct events and seminars and cafeteria for students and staff. There are also facilities within the school compound for students to exercise hoping on the sports facilities while a health centre with first aid facilities is available in school in case of emergent situations. The college also offers transport facilities in order to ease the transport for both students and the staff.
Various programmes are developed in Government Ayurveda College which can include undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses. The first and foremost is the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) a four and half year undergraduate course, which admits 70 students. In this level of study, the college offers number of MD and MS courses for the particular specialisation in Ayurveda for normally have 5-8 seats. Further, the college offers PhD in Ayurveda and several number of Post Graduate Diploma courses in the respective fields like Swasthavritta and Yoga, Kshar Karma and Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics for 2 seats each. All courses are full time and the major focus is on theoretical and practical knowledge of Ayurveda medicinal system.
About the admission process it is important to note that it differs depending on the programme of study in Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram. Candidates admitted in BAMS are ranked according to the list obtained from the entrance examination conducted by the Commission for Entrance Examination, Government of Kerala. While, the postgraduate admissions are mostly dependent on the All India AYUSH Post Graduate Entrance Test commonly known as AIAPGET for MD/MS in AYUSH courses. For undergraduate courses, the college takes the scores of national level entrance examinations like NEET for admission while for post graduate courses it takes the scores of NEET PG.
