The CEPT University in Ahmedabad was earlier known as the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology. The institute was set up in its original avatar back as the School of Architecture in 1962 by the Ahmedabad Education Society (AES). Subsequent schools for Planning, Building Science & Technology and for Interior Design were established within the same premises in the years of 1972, 1982 and 1991 respectively. Till 2002, the CEPT was run as an autonomous body awarding its own diplomas. From 2002 onwards till 2005, it got affiliated to the Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University. Post that though, the game changed, with CEPT being deemed as a university approved by the UGC (University Grants Commission). It presently occupies twelve acres of land in the state of Gujarat.
As the name suggests, the CEPT is dedicated to serving programmes which lead to environmental benefits and planning. There is a CEPT Foundation Programme that all students enrolled here need to go through, irrespective of the level or the course enrolled for. These and a few more subjects are run by the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC). The TLC has a unique training methodology which it utilizes to inculcate a holistic sense of education among the students enrolled here. Programmes are available at both the UG as well as PG levels. The entire academics here is run by a cohort of five faculty departments, each possessing expertise in its own area. The Faculty of Architecture runs the B. Arch and M. Arch programmes. The Faculty of Planning offers the programmes for B. Plan and M. Plan. The B. Des and M. Des programmes are run by the Faculty of Design. The course run by the Faculty of Management is the M.A. in Urban Management. Some doctoral programmes may also be undertaken under each of these faculty areas.
The department with the maximum options of courses to opt for is the Faculty of Technology. It offers up the B. Tech programme in Construction Technology. At the master’s level, several programmes are on offer here. Those are the M. Tech in the areas of- Geomatics, Building Energy Performance, Structural Engineering Design and in Construction Engineering & Management. As may be deduced from the list of programmes on offer across the departments, the entire mandate of the university is to cater towards sustainable development and ecological conservation. The CEPT University has a unique initiative known as the Summer and Winter Schools (SWS). Under this, students from any other institute as well, may enrol for short duration certifications on the areas that fall within the mandate of the CEPT.
Research is another key area at the CEPT University in Ahmedabad. To cater to this, several Centres of Excellence have been established on campus. There are Centres for the areas of – Urban Equity, Professional Development, Design Innovation & Craft, Urban Transport, Water & Sanitation, Urban Land & Real Estate Policy and for Building Science & Energy. Besides, there is also a CEPT Research and Development Foundation. A government backed initiative exists on campus known as the Anchor Institute for Infrastructure. This institute gathers research from different nodal institutes which are – the Birla Vishwakarma Mahavidyalaya near Anand, the Tolani Foundation Gandhidham Polytechnic in Adipur and the Xavier Technical Institute in the town of Sevasi, which lies within the district of Vadodara.
The CEPT University has been a pioneer when it comes to forging international ties. These collaborations may be for the purpose of student exchange, faculty exchange, knowledge collaboration or consulting assignments. The CEPT has partners all over the world in the countries of – USA, UK, Italy, Germany, Australia, Georgia, Malaysia, Austria, New Zealand, France, Slovakia, Israel, The Netherlands, Spain, Turkey and in Switzerland. Some of the leading universities within this gambit include the likes of – the University of Cambridge, University of Wisconsin, University of Ferrara, Deakin University, RPI, Istanbul Technical University, Academy of Fine Arts & Design, University of Udine, University of New South Wales, University of Westminster, Taylor’s University, Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, University of Melbourne, Edinburgh College of Arts, Delft University of Technology, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the Technical University of Munich, besides several more.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. There is a sports field where outdoor sports may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
The CEPT University has its own publication wing, from which several writings have emerged, including full- fledged books. Workshops are also held year- round, as the university has a highly hands- on teaching module. All this and much more has led to the university acquiring healthy rankings across various platforms. The Careers 360 magazine for instance has placed the CEPT University on AAA category among universities, but even better at AAA+ within the category for engineering colleges.
