Established in the year 1966, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun is the constituent unit of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space, Government of India. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing currently offers the Postgraduate, PG Diploma and Short Term Certificate programmes. At the PG level, IIRS Dehradun offers M.Tech and M.Sc programmes. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun also offers the PG Diploma programme and 3 short term level programmes. Admission in the M.Sc and PG Diploma programmes at Indian Institute of Remote Sensing is made on the basis of the Academic Profile of the candidates and admission in the M.Tech programme at IIRS Dehradun is made on the basis of GATE score. The Government  Sponsored candidates are not required to appear in the Entrance Examination. The candidates are further required to appear for an Interview. Admission in the short term programmes at Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun is made as per the norms of the University and the Institution. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing provides Placement Assistance to its students. 

The students at IIRS Dehradun are placed in various Organisations. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun provides Hostel, Library, Health Care, Sports and various other facilities to the students. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun is affiliated to Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. IIRS Dehradun offers the M.Tech programme in collaboration with Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing offers the M.Sc and PGD programmes in collaboration with the Faculty of Geo- Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente (UT), the Netherlands. The M.Tech programme of Indian Institute of Remote Sensing is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education. All the programmes at Andhra University are accredited by NBA and NAAC with the ‘A’ Grade.
