On November 17, 1962, in Pune, the Indian government founded the Institute of Tropical Meteorology (ITM), which is now a separate division of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On April 1, 1971, ITM was renamed the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and granted autonomy as a research organisation. Since then, the Institute has developed into a pre-eminent worldwide research hub in a variety of atmospheric science fields, most notably those related to monsoons and tropical climates. Known for its unique approach to tropical meteorology research, the Institute boasts over 100 scientists working on various projects related to the field. IITM Pune courses are M.Sc and Ph.D. Over the years, the Institute's work has been distinguished by noteworthy advancements in research and the physical expansion of its campus and infrastructure. IITM Pune admission into the courses is given based on merit acquired by the students in the qualifying examination.
In the thrust areas of atmospheric sciences such as weather forecasting, climatology, monsoon studies, climate modelling, hydrometeorology, weather modification, atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric electricity, cloud physics, instrumentation for observational studies, theoretical studies, and studies relating to land-surface processes, IITM has made significant strides in its research and academic activities.
