Careers360: Tell us something about the institute; when it was set up, vision and mission

Director: Goa Institute of Management is a leading business school dedicated to advancing management education and shaping responsible leaders. It was founded in 1993 by Fr. Romuald D’Souza, a Padma Shri awardee, who also founded XIM Bhubaneswar and was the director of XLRI Jamshedpur. GIM began with 6 faculty members, a single programme, an intake of 24 students, and classes conducted from a rented premise. Today, the institute is home to over 100 faculty members and offers 6 academic programmes across management education, supporting a vibrant student community with an annual intake of over 900 students. GIM is among the few Indian B-schools accredited by AACSB, AMBA, BGA, and SAQS, with all its eligible programmes accredited by NBA.

GIM is consistently ranked among India’s top business schools, and integrates academics with experiential learning, industry engagement, and a strong emphasis on values-driven leadership. Our commitment to responsible management education is reflected in its teaching, research, social outreach, and sustainability initiatives. Through the Service Learning and Rural Immersion (SLRI) programme, students work with partner organisations on field-based projects across multiple states. These projects apply management tools to development challenges relating to livelihoods, education, gender empowerment, environmental sustainability, public health, and governance, with links to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This approach was also nominated for the ‘Best CSR and Sustainability Initiative’ by AMBA & BGA Excellence Awards 2026.

Careers360: Tell us something about the admission process?

Director: GIM follows a holistic approach to admissions, structured to assess candidates beyond their examination scores. While academic performance and aptitude are important to us, we also consider the applicant's overall profile and potential contribution to the learning environment.

Admissions are conducted through two phases: the Regular Round and the Achiever’s Round, which is an early, profile-based shortlisting process that recognises candidates with exceptional academic, professional, sports, or co-curricular achievements before entrance examination scores are factored into the evaluation. The institute also involved alumni as panel members during the Regular Round, bringing an additional perspective to the assessment process.

Candidates are evaluated through multiple components, including their academic record, qualifying examination scores, work experience, achievements, and performance in the subsequent admission section process. The objective is to identify candidates who perform well academically while demonstrating curiosity, initiative, diverse experience, and the potential to become responsible leaders. We also have scholarship pathways linked to the admissions process, including ACCESS scholarships for eligible candidates.

Careers360: What kind of infrastructure can students expect at the institute? Please elaborate?

Director: GIM offers a fully residential environment spread across our 50-acre campus in Goa. The campus is designed to support classroom learning, collaboration, extracurricular activities, and student life. Students from different parts of the country live, study, and work together here, creating considerable peer learning outside the campus as well. Students have access to modern classrooms and learning spaces, a 24-hour library, technology-enabled academic facilities, and specialised labs, including Bloomberg Finance Lab, Behavioral Science Lab, Data Analytics Lab, and VR Lab.

The campus also offers extensive facilities for sports, fitness, and recreation, including a swimming pool, gymnasium, and courts for indoor and outdoor sports such as football, cricket, basketball, volleyball, badminton, and lawn tennis. Spaces for student activities, clubs, and committees further contribute to campus life. Student clubs also create opportunities to interact with industry professionals, alumni, and external speakers. Our objective is to ensure that the infrastructure supports the academic and personal development of students.

Careers360: There is a lot of stress that is being made with regard to interaction with the industry as well as companies that recruit. What are the steps being taken by the institute in this direction?

Director: GIM’s wider recruiter network includes organisations such as Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, HSBC, ICICI Bank, Wells Fargo, SAP, Johnson & Johnson, and EY India, among others. Stakeholder engagement, including engagement with industry, is a key strategic pillar for GIM. We therefore see our relationship with industry as something that goes beyond recruitment. Companies that engage with GIM are also invited to interact with students through classroom sessions, guest lectures, symposiums, discussions, live projects, student-led events, experiential learning initiatives, and other professional engagements. For example, one of GIM’s initiatives in this area is Career Chronicles, which brings students into conversation with industry leaders. The initiative engages with more than 60 industry leaders, helping bridge the gap between industry and academia. There are also programme-specific industry engagements. The PGDM-BIFS programme, for example, conducted a Fintech-AI conclave with industry speakers and a CFO roundtable involving senior finance professionals. These interactions allow students to understand how concepts discussed in the classroom translate into real organisational situations.

We also encourage engagement with GIM’s alumni network (many of whom hold senior positions across industries) and the Board, which includes significant representation from industry. GIM’s Campus to Corporate sessions bring alumni from reputed organisations to the campus to discuss career trajectories, consulting, transitions, and preparation for internships and placements. Our objective is to make these relationships meaningful and academically relevant. Recruitment is certainly an important part of the relationship, but industry engagement should also contribute to what students learn, the perspectives they develop, and their understanding of the changing world of work.

Careers360: Internships are now mandatory as per AICTE guidelines. Does the institute help students with this? If yes, how?

Director: Yes. Summer internships are an important component of management education at GIM because they provide students with an opportunity to apply classroom learning in an organisational setting and understand workplace expectations. Our placement and career development ecosystem works with organisations to facilitate internship opportunities across sectors and functional areas. GIM works with three training partners to support students through summer internship preparation and placement preparation. These interventions help students strengthen their readiness for the selection process and prepare for the expectations of recruiters.

The scale of the summer internship process is reflected in GIM’s 2025–26 PGDM figures, wherein 47 recruiters had participated. The highest internship stipend was Rs 3 lakh, while the average was Rs 1,06,307 and the median was Rs 1 lakh.

The learning continues after students complete their internships. Through initiatives such as Summer Solstice, selected students present their summer internship projects to GIM alumni. The projects are evaluated on analytical rigour, practical relevance, innovation, and clarity of insights. GIM encourages students to make the most of the opportunities available to them.

Careers360: Can you please share details if there is any collaboration with universities abroad?

Director: Internationalisation is another important strategic pillar for GIM. We have developed academic relationships and collaborations with nearly 25 institutions outside India, providing students with opportunities to gain international exposure through exchange programmes, study tours, country immersions, academic collaborations, and other forms of engagement. We have signed MoUs with institutions including EM Normandie in France and Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK. Proposed collaborations also involved institutions such as SolBridge International School of Business in South Korea, Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia, and Rutgers University in the United States. Students have participated in exchange programmes involving institutions in Portugal and Finland, as well as country immersion programmes involving partners in Greece and Poland. GIM also hosted an India Immersion Programme for 36 students and two faculty members from Mondragon University in Spain in May 2025. The programme combined classroom sessions, site visits, and short projects with start-ups at the Atal Incubation Centre.

Internationalisation brings different academic perspectives, cultures, and approaches into the learning environment. I personally spent 26 years as a senior academic in New Zealand before returning to India last month as the Director of GIM, and I have seen first-hand the value that international exposure can bring to management education. So it is one of the reasons why internationalisation is a priority area for me. Going forward, we intend to deepen GIM’s international partnerships and create more meaningful opportunities for students to engage with organisations globally and develop a broader understanding of international business.

Careers360: Please share placement statistics with information on the average package, highest and lowest package, number of students placed and details of companies that have recruited.

Director: GIM has a diverse placement ecosystem, with students being recruited across sectors and functions by leading organisations. For the batch of 2025, the highest CTC was Rs 35 LPA, the average was Rs 16.27 LPA, and the median was Rs 15 LPA. These figures reflect the range of career opportunities available to students across our programmes. GIM has a diverse recruiter base spanning sectors such as consulting, BFSI, technology, FMCG, healthcare, manufacturing, and other industries. More than 110 recruiters participated in the placement season, including Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, HSBC, Wells Fargo, ICICI Bank, EY India, Moody’s Analytics, Arcesium and Oxane Partners.

The programme-wise outcomes for the 2025–26 placement season were as follows:

    • PGDM-BDA:

Highest CTC of Rs 35 lakh, average CTC of Rs 15.48 lakh, and median CTC of Rs 14 lakh. Of the 172 students in the batch, 153 were placed, and 34 received pre-placement offers.

    • PGDM-BIFS:

Highest CTC of Rs 28.60 lakh, average CTC of Rs 15.34 lakh, and median CTC of Rs 14.45 lakh. The batch comprised 61 students, and 41 companies participated in the placement process.

    • PGDM-HCM:

Highest CTC of Rs 29 lakh, average CTC of Rs 15.51 lakh, and median CTC of Rs 13 lakh. The batch comprised 60 students, with 16 companies participating in placements.

While compensation is an important outcome, GIM's focus is also on the quality and diversity of roles offered, the sectors in which students build careers, and the long-term professional opportunities available to them. Our industry engagement is therefore closely connected to both placements and the broader career development of our students.
