The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is a hub of interdisciplinary research aimed at understanding and addressing Earth's complexities and environmental challenges pertinent to sustainability development goals. The multidisciplinary faculty team of EES translates into teaching possibilities spanning diverse subjects within Earth and Environmental Sciences.

The key areas of our research include analyzing regional climate and atmospheric dynamics, employing satellite remote sensing for diverse earth observation, interpreting paleoclimatic sedimentary (such as lake sediments) records, and predicting landslides and erosion patterns, to innovating bio-based wastewater treatment and water reuse techniques, exploring electromicrobiology for sustainable solutions, and investigating air quality and atmospheric chemistry. Our commitment extends to traversing Earth's history through organic geochemical techniques and delving into granitic magmatism, metamorphism, and associated crustal metallogenic processes.

The Ph.D Earth and Environmental Sciences programme can be completed with a minimum duration of three years, including the course work and can also extend upto a maximum of six years. The programme structure involves coursework, a qualifying examination at the end of the coursework, thesis work/research, and a thesis examination, leading to the award of a PhD degree. The degree is awarded by the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research.

Eligibility Criteria

An applicant should have a M.Sc/M. Tech degree with a first-class academic record throughout (minimum 65% for General/OBC category and minimum 60% for SC/ST/PD) in one or more of the following subjects: Atmospheric Sciences / Computer Sciences / Climate Sciences / Chemistry / Data Sciences / Artificial Intelligence / Earth and Environmental Sciences / Environmental Microbiology / Environmental Biotechnology / Environmental Engineering/ Geology / Geophysics / Hydrology / Mathematics / Meteorology / Microwave Remote Sensing / Planetary Science / Physics / Remote Sensing / Geomatics Engineering.

A B.Tech degree (with a minimum 75% for General /OBC category and minimum 70% for SC/ST/PD) in one or more of the following subjects: Computer Science and Information Technology/Data Sciences/ Artificial Intelligence/ Engineering streams such as Civil / Aerospace / Agriculture / Electrical / Electronics and Communication.

Admission Details

For applying to the PhD programme at IISER Mohali, students are required to pass a national-level test for PhD admissions. Screening tests and/or interviews are conducted to select the best students. The majority of doctoral students at IISER Mohali have qualified for fellowships given by CSIR, UGC, DST, DBT, ICMR, and other funding agencies.
