Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University, Mumbai was established in 1916 by Maharshi Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve under the Government of Maharashtra. The university witnessed its first graduation in 1921 with five women students. SNDTWU Mumbai was started with an aim to provide education to women by empowering them with knowledge. There are various colleges which come under the administration of SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai. The university is affiliated to 166 institutes. It offers various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes divided into 39 departments. The university also offers various academic and infrastructural facilities to the students including hostels, counselling services, auditorium, cafeteria, health centre, consumer store, physical education, Maharshi Karve Seminar Complex, Bharatratna Maharshi Karve Knowledge Resource Centre etc.

NSS- National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Youth Programme which is established under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Students of Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University, Mumbai have also conducted various programmes under this scheme including international yoga day, blood donation, leprosy campaign, swachh bharat, literary campaign, mass cleaning, mass tree plantation, road traffic awareness, sand sculpturing, polio vaccine, disaster management, PFMS training etc. to spread awareness among the common people.
NCC- N.C.C has been formed inside SNDTWU Mumbai to show the importance of living a disciplined life among students which also helps them contribute their part towards the development of the country. The students of the N.C.C group also take part in various other activities including parasailing, paragliding, paradropping, training camps, National Integration camps, rock climbing and mountaineering activities like boat pulling/sailing and ship modelling etc.
Students Development- Students Development has been formed with an objective to develop the personality of students by providing them with various services and making them indulge in several activities. This department also conducts the university election among students where a supervisor is selected by students. Various activities and programmes are also conducted by the members of this department. Other meetings like Board of Student's Welfare, Principals, Cultural In-charge, Hostel Mentors, Hostel Student Committees, University Students’ Council etc are also conducted by this department. Various inter and intra level competitions are also conducted by the students.

SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai admissions are offered to various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Students are offered admissions to various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes based on merit/ university level entrance exam or National level entrance exam. For certain programmes, students may also have to clear an interview round and group discussion. SNDTWU admissions to Ph.D programmes are offered based on the scores of the entrance test followed by an interview conducted by the university.
