Candidates are offered admissions at two levels at TIFR Mumbai: postgraduate and doctoral. TIFR Mumbai admissions are offered in the following branches: biology, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, physics and computer science. TIFR Mumbai courses offered for admission are M.Sc. and Ph.D. Chemistry Integrated, M.Sc. and Ph.D. Astronomy and Astrophysics Integrated, M.Sc. and Ph.D. Nuclear and Atomic Physics Integrated, M.Sc. Biological Sciences, Ph.D. Theoretical Physics to name a few. TIFR Mumbai admission comprises two steps: a written test and an interview. Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Mumbai written test is conducted in five disciplines: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Computer Science. It is to be noted that the science education entrance examination is conducted separately.
Note that the TIFR Mumbai Biology entrance examination is termed JGEEBILS (Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences). Some TIFR Mumbai subject boards accept nationwide entrance examination CSIR-NET/GATE/JEST scores for shortlisting of candidates for the interview round. Shortlisted candidates for TIFR Mumbai admissions are called for an interview at TIFR (or relevant research centre) and interviewed by a panel belonging to a particular subject board. Also, shortlisted candidates are asked to provide recommendation letters from two of their teachers, provided the criteria may vary according to the subject board.
Students are queried on their broad training as well as on possible research experience and areas of interest. Student performance in interviews is scored on multiple criteria, and the final selection is based on this score. It is to be noted that the TIFR Mumbai admission process varies with subject boards. For instance, the Mathematics board at TIFR Mumbai conducts another short written test for shortlisted candidates. Whereas, the Biology Subject Board typically uses two interviews: one for shortlisting students, who are further interviewed for the final selection. The board also asks the students to write a statement of research interests.

Step 1- Visit the Graduate School Admissions official website and click on ‘apply online’ under the application tab.
Step 2- Enter a valid email address in the basic registration form. An SMS and email will be sent to the registered number and email address containing the login credentials.
Step 3- Once logged in, click the "Go to Application" link on the right-top corner of the page and complete the full application process.
Step 4- Pay the application fee (non-refundable) for male candidates- Rs. 1200, female candidates- Rs. 600 through banking/debit/credit card/UPI or other modes as available on the payment gateway.
Step 5- After successful online payment, kindly log in account on the website by using your application sequence number as your user-id and check the payment status. An automated confirmation email will be sent to the registered email address after the successful payment.
Step 6- Take out a printout of the TIFR Mumbai application form for future reference.

See in general, if one have 50% marks in the TIFR GS examination, then its quite confirmed that the student will get a call for the interview. Now every year, the difficulty of the paper change for different subjects and as a result, the cutoff changes. So nothing for sure can't be provided, although you have moderate chances to get the interview call.

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR Mumbai) offers research and integrated programs at PG and doctoral levels. There are M.Sc, M.Sc+Ph.D and PhD courses offered in various streams of Science. Admissions are entrance based for all courses.
So you can't study/research in TIFR until you complete undergraduate course.
