Aravind Eye Hospitals and Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology in the city of Madurai was founded in 1977 and is the educational institution as well as eye care centre focused on ophthalmology. This affiliated college is situated at Anna Nagar, Madurai, Tamilnadu; however, it is officially recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The institute occupies the area of 3,160 sq.meters and has two postgraduate programmes in ophthalmology. The institute takes 52 students from all classes and has 28 faculty members that make it easier ass to maintain the student-faculty ratio. Aravind Eye Hospitals and Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology provides two full time Post graduate courses in ophthalmology. The proposed MS Ophthalmology programme being a three-year course has accreditations for 20 intake seats and Diploma in Ophthalmology being a two-year course which has intakes for 8 seats. Both courses are aimed in training one in as many facets as possible of eye care and surgeries. In all the two programmes, just 28 students are taken indicating that the institute gives a lot of emphasis to quality through enrolment of many few students.

For the MS Ophthalmology programme, candidates are to sit and pass in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Post Graduate (NEET PG).
