The Dhirajlal Gandhi College of Technology (DGCT) is located in the industrial city of Salem in Tamil Nadu. It was founded quite recently, in the year 2011. The campus spans a total area of ten acres. The college is affiliated to the to the Anna University, based in Chennai, the capital city of the state. This affiliation, ensures approval with the UGC (University Grants Commission). The courses here are also recognized by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). In addition, the DGCT has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning a B+ grade rating in it. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. It is also an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certified institution.
There are courses at the DGCT for both the UG as well as PG levels, plus a doctoral programme as well. At the undergrad level, the B. E. programme is on offer for the engineering areas of- Mechanical, Civil, Computer Science, Electronics & Communication and for Electrical & Electronics. At the master’s level, the courses get more technical. So, the M. E. programmes are available for the areas of- Structural Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Communication System and in CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/ Manufacturing). Some doctoral programmes may also be pursued over here. The entire academics here is run by a cohort of six departments. Five of these are for the areas of UG study. The sixth one if the Department of Science and Humanities. This one takes care of the fundamental sciences and the language courses.
The DGCT has also taken up membership of several professional bodies. The membership is with- IESA (India Electronics and Semiconductor Association), ICTACT (ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu), CII (Confederation of Indian Industries), MMA (Madras Management Association), Production Council and with Livewire. MoUs have also been signed with some industry bodies to bridge the industry- academia gap. The MOUs are with- ISTE (Indian Society for Technical Education), IIPE (Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy), IE, IETE (Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers), ICI (Indian Concrete Institute) and CSI (Computer Society of India).
The Dhirajlal Gandhi College of Technology from Tamil Nadu has also signed up a few MOUs with leading corporate houses. This list includes IBM, Microsoft, National Instruments, Texas Instruments, Minster India, Purple Squirrel, DMW and Samsung, plus a few more. As research is a very important part of the DGCT, an official newsletter is also periodically released by the institute. This tracks all key developments on college within the period. It includes contributions from the different departments.
To further the research credentials of the college, several Centres of Excellence (CoEs) have also been opened on campus. Some of these Centres of Excellence are in collaboration with leading corporates. US tech giant Cisco, for example has its Networking Academy here. Some of the other areas for which Centres of Excellence have been set up include- Smart Cities, GIS Surveying, Green Building, Internet of Things, Renewable Energy, Design of Embedded System, Optical Communication, e- Learning, Cloud Computing, Automation Solutions, Assembly & Animations and CNC Programming & Operations, besides a few more.
The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies. Hygienic food is prepared at the college cafeteria. The college even has its own transport to ferry students to and from the campus. A convenience store is also located within campus. The library here is one of the best stocked within the region. Besides the physical books on display, it also provides digital access to en number of international academic journals for research and academic purposes.
