The Dr. Gafoor Memorial MES Mampad College is located in the town of Mampad, which lies in the Malappuram district of Kerala. The college was founded in the year 1965. The college campus covers a total area worth twenty- seven acres of land. As the name suggests, this college has been named in memory of Dr. P.K. Abdul Gafoor, who was the founding president of the MES (Muslim Educational Society). He was also an eminent educator in his time. His society the MES had gone on to become the highest disseminator of scholarships in the country then. This college is also an associated of the Delhi- based Foundation for Academic Excellence and Access (FAEA).
At present, the Dr. Gafoor Memorial MES Mampad College is affiliated to the University of Calicut, also located in Malappuram, founded in 1968. This affiliation to the MGU also ensures approval from the UGC (University Grants Commission). It has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council), earning an A grade in it. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results. Courses are on offer, here at both the UG as well as the PG levels.
At the undergrad level, the B.A. may be pursued in the areas of English, Economics, History, Mass Communication, Malayalam, Political Sceince and in Arabic & Islamic History. Commerce students may go for the B. Com. This may be undertaken in conjunction with the subsidiary options of Co- Operation and Computer Applications. The professional course of BBA is another option. Several options also exist in the science stream. These are the B Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Food Technology and for Mathematics. At the master’s level, the course options are similar though there is no management programme. The M. Com comes with the specialization in Financial Management.
Several add- on programmes are also on offer here. These are meant for working professionals, seeking a skill upgrade, but not able to devote full working hours to any academic programme. These may be taken up by the enrolled students or even by external ones. Here, these are offered in the areas of- Communicative English, Travel & Tourism Management, Bakery & Confectionary Technology and in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL). The college has always believed in providing benefits to the broader society. The students here have likewise been instilled with such value. And that is why the students of this college have been active participants in government schemes such as the NSS (National Service Scheme) and the NCC (National Cadet Corps).
The entire academics here is run by a cohort of eighteen departments, each with expertise in its own area. These are for the fields of – History, Arabic, Commerce, Political Science, Zoology, Economics, Islamic History, Food Technology, Statistics, Mathematics, Mass Communication, Physics, English, Botany, Chemistry, Hindi, Physical Education and Malayalam. Research too plays a very important role to this college. That is why, the Kerala- based Dr. Gafoor Memorial MES Mampad College has its own research wing. It is known as the RMAC (Research Monitoring and Advisory Committee). Among its many activities detailed, one is the release of periodic academic and research- based journals.
The most comprehensive one released is the Multidisciplinary Journal by Departments of Science. This chronicles research from across the departments dealing with the sciences. Another is Second Thoughts, a Biannual edition, the brainchild of the Department of Arts. There is also the Journal of Commerce, needless to say, from the relevant department. The last one is the International Journal of Human Ecology, Humanities and Social Science (IJHEHSS). Specific author guidelines are posted for all writings. The college also has its own research forum. Several research projects have also been taken up by the faculty members. These have been generated by government or industry bodies.
Some of these leading agencies that have generated such assignments include the UGC, KSBB (Kerala State Biodiversity Board), KSCSTE (Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment), Directorate of Minority Welfare, UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), CEPF (Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund), Idea Wild and the Kerala State Higher Education Council. A number of student projects are also running with the KSCSTE. The Dr. Gafoor Memorial MES Mampad College has also been extremely proactive in signing collaborative deals with foreign and domestic universities and well as corporate bodies. China and South Korea are the foreign countries where this college’s imprint may be found in.
Similar deals domestically are with the likes of – MES Medical College, Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Kerala Forest Research Institute, SACON, Eastern Herbals, District Industry Centre and the Malabar Christian College. The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for both boys and girls. There is a sports field where cricket and football may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports. The gymnasium may also be used by all. A large auditorium is there to facilitate major events, at both intra and inter college level. The campus is Wi- Fi enabled. Science laboratories have the latest of equipment. A health centre is also there to cater to medical emergencies.
