The Government Institute of Garment Technology, Amritsar was established in 1937 and is one of the oldest institutions in India. In affiliation with The Punjab State Board of Technical Education and Industrial Training, Chandigarh, the GIGT has been offering diploma courses and professional education in Garment Technology, Fashion Design and business related to Fashion. Enthusiasts of the fashion and clothing industry can apply for admission. The diploma courses are 3-year full-time courses for which candidates need to clear the minimum eligibility criteria. They shall qualify in their 10th board examinations with passing marks in english, mathematics and science. Admissions are usually begun in the month of April.

The college offers a range of facilities to enhance the learning experience for its students. These GIGT facilities include a well-equipped Audiovisual Hall, which serves as a platform for lectures and seminars from both industry and academia, equipped with multimedia LCD projectors, sound systems, and internet access. Students also benefit from a dedicated Girls' Hostel, accommodating approximately 100 students, complete with modern kitchens, dining areas, and indoor games facilities.
